giemme
Gloss coats do darken the overall colors, that's for sure, based on my experience. Some more than others, I'd say. Personally, I'd have de-saturated (toned down) the decals by airbrushing a very light coat of grey or green on top of them, then sealed again with a gloss clear coat and then started with all the dirtying up, but from what I see from your last pics, I very much like the effect you achieved, so why bother? Ciao 1

I still wasn’t happy tonight so I took the thinners to it. 😲 Edited September 25, 2018 by The Spadgent

The Spadgent
Good evening gents and indeed ladies. This has been going increasingly left of center for a few days now and it reached a bit of a head this evening. Let us begin. Not happy with the lighter green spray I had done to try and bring back some of the lost magic. 🤖 I doused the bloody thing in Tamiya thinners and got it off. ahhh there’s the glossy bag o’ spanners. 🤮 I know Flory. Good ol’ Flory That always works right? .... guys...... right? 😷🤡 I mixed up some dirt and grime and blasted it on with an airbrush as usual. looks ok but I’ve lost the chipping but I still need to rub it off. I didn’t take a pic but trust me rubbing it off didn’t make it look any better. 😩 so upon returning from work I tried one last thing. I scrubbed off the Flory under a running tap and tried to do a light green filter using thinned down Tamiya paints. She canni taek Aaany mooor capt’n. 💩 admitting defeat and having thought about what went wrong at work I have formulated a plan. As I don’t have a shelf of doom and seeing as we never leave a man behind this happened. lets call it take two. Sorry for going back a few steps, I was so close to the mud too, but I really want this to look the way I see it in my head. I think plan B is sound. (Ish) please bear with me, I’m more happy with her now than I have been in a day or two and a happy modeller is a.... er.... you know ..... happy modeller. 🧘♂️ *rolls up sleeves. Where did I put that air brush. Johnny back spacer. ps. I’ll get to try painted decals this time too. The Spadgent
Thank you for sticking with me. I’ll try and get the next few steps done as quickly as I can without cocking up along the way. Tonight saw the pre shade happen. I’ve gone slightly darker to get more tone this time. The little tarps I made from tissue got a pre shade as well. I made them with tissue paper dipped in water and gators grip then folded. The mix of rust was more juicy too. Mmmmmm juice.😍 That needs to dry before I ...... did I top coat before I put on the chipping fluid? I’ll go back and see. * wonders through thread. ahhhh I did a mat coat. Interesting. 🤔 I’ll do that again when it’s dry. Hope you’re all having a splendid week. take care y’all. Johnny two times. two times. 👬 Edited September 26, 2018 by The Spadgent

ScanmanDan
That's the way. First you have to do, then be self critical and re try again. Failure to meet your expectations is always a good thing so long as you learn something in the process and don't get too frustrated in the execution. Have fun and experiment until you have a system of techniques you know and are happy with. Above all have fun! Don't get too upset if your results aren't 100 percent perfect, just build another kit! I like your efforts and am looking forward to your next set of progress pictures. Dan

The Spadgent
Evening Everyone. It’s been a lazy Saturday with some modeling, well painting thrown in for good measure. First off I found some decals I could use as a template. Let’s try this? a bit tricky. I know I’ll try this. Might be a thing. so I tested it out on a mule. With a few free hand tests and a mask test. I’ll just peel that off to get the mask in place. oh...... 🤣 ok so that’s not going to work either. I did some more free hand tests, not bad some of them. Time for the plunge. I’ll give the main green a go, this time without salt. The plan is to coat twice in chipping fluid as before but this time lay down another pre-shade layer. Then green. then water and chipping. ok, good. I’m happy with that. Now the main parts, one at a time this go around. Chipping fluid on and pre-shade. Then green. Welllll green and yellow ratio 7:3. I did some lighter passes too. The masking choice was to use a magazine stencil and Tamiya tape to hold it in place. Awkward but just doable. Then white. It came out ok. I painted the red free hand. It’s still a little wet here. Then after all that, spray over with water and scratched to buggery with a short brush, cocktail stick and a cotton bud. not too over the top and for me the right colour. Once all the other colored bits are on it’ll look like how I saw it in my head. ( almost ) well that’s it for tonight. More planned tomorrow. Thanks for dropping in. all the best. Johnny.
