RNZAF 1/72 F4U-1A Corsair NZ5277

Hi
I would like to join with this F4U-1 (or -2) "Birdcage" Corsair
Tamiya 1/48th scale

I have not yet chosen the subject: I have already built the white 20 of the Marines VMF-213 in 1/72 scale but it remains my favorite for early 2 tone camo and the presence of the eagle on the engine cowl
Second of the list is one of the two night fighter of the Marines VMF(N)-532 (black 205 or 212) , last but don't least , the 3 (actually 4) tone camo 17-F-13 of the Navy VF-17

This is the model mentioned above (Tamiya 1/72nd with Sky Models decal)

Hi Pierpaolo, it's alway nice to see a Corsair in a GB.

I maybe wrong but but Marine Corsair's may be ineligible for this GB. As far as I know the marines didn't operate in the areas covered by this GB, South East Asia (though VF-17 I think did for a short while operate out of Bougainville).  The Fleet Air Arm and RNZAF did operate F4U-1 Corsairs but I'm not sure about the "bird cage" versions, someone will know.

If you can find further info on you build then that would be great.

oops , i'm sorry , I don't have payd attention to the geographical limits of the GB , unfortunately my understanding of English is limited to simple concepts and short phrases :(

My first choice for this GB was a Revell 1/72 RNZAF F4U-1A Corsair NZ5277 (Angry Donald) but i have noticed a mistake in the Skymodel decal : the number 77 is black instead of white.. I can obtain the white 77 with masking or cutting from a white decal..

Or else I can build a FAA Hellcat from one of the many kit i have..

Might have my wires crossed with the rules but the uss bunkerhill participated in the battle for rabaul,  with air cover for the fleet during the battle, the box art  i believe is one of these, although the corsairs were land based earlier they were reinstated to the  uss bunkerhill for the battle, forgive me if I'm wide of the mark here,

Glynn

Hi Rich,

Would USMC (MAG) Units/Squadrons that operated from the same airfields as

either RAAF or RNZAF Squadrons be eligible?

I can think of VMF 215 that operated from Piva and Torokina on Bouganville, where

RNZAF SU's/Squadrons also operated from at the same time

The link below has a list of Marine Units which operated from Green/Nissan Island the same time

as RNZAF Squadrons

Green Island USMC units

Though I don't know if a Birdcage F4U-1 would have still been there about that time?

Thanks/Regards

as long as those RAAF or RNZAF airfields were inside the SEA area.

RAAF & RNZAF aircraft can be anywhere, all others must have been based within the SEA region, New Guinea being the west most, the Philippines is excluded.

that's ok, the RNZAF Corsair would perfect, the number should be an easy fix, FAA aircraft are also ok.

  • Pierpaolo changed the title to RNZAF 1/72 F4U-1A Corsair NZ5277

Hi

Second try for a eligible subject

This is the relatively new 1/72nd F4U-1A Corsair from Revell

It's hard to recognize the shapes with this white plastic!

Decals from Skymodels (notice the number 77 in black)

This profile is very wrong.. this Corsair carried a "normal" but very faded 4 tone camouflage and the number on the NACA was white

My documentation (with my english i can only watch the photo  )

First step : remove the white from plastic , having to choose a color why not use the right one?

Hi Pierpaolo,

Nice to see another RNZAF Corsair

As an FYI

With the Sky Decals (you may already know this or not) RNZAF Aircraft Never

ever wore yellow surrounds on Wing Roundels, Plus the actual Roundel was a

Dark Blue colour.

Photo showing wing roundels - no yellow on Wing Roundels

Look forward to your build

Hi Pierpaolo, that fits the build perfectly.

Nice colour scheme choice as well. Over 1/3 of my collection of aviation books are not in english so i have to look at the pictures as well, and really its the pictures I'm interested in.

The decals should be relatively simple to correct. The RNZAF aircraft suffered as badly as the RAAF aircraft in the tropics with paint jobs. They faded badly after a short time and it mostly affected the paint applied post factory they were constantly being touched up.

RNZAF F4U Solomon Is.

this one is more a build review but it has some great photo's attached.

F4U-1A build

Good luck with the build, I like the way you removed all the white from the plastic. Look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

Bad news about the roundels.. I think it is difficult to fix the decals, too many masking jobs, but I could try. If I do not succeed I should change subject again. I spotted a couple of FAA Corsair from HMS Victorious.. the roundels from skymodels decals are wrong again but easier to fix

I have some spare 1/72 Roundels for an RNZAF Corsair (proper colour)

if you are still interested in doing NZ5277, you can cobble together with the Irate Duck from

the Sky Decal Sheet

Send me a PM (Personal message) with your Postal address in Italy.

I joined wings and fuselage together

The wing has many errors that I have tried to fix: wrong position of the formation lights, incorrect shape of the oil cooler exhausts and presence of the tear drop shaped recess for the inner wing pylons of the F4U-1D.
