MPC Boeing 747 - 1971 Issue

Recommended Posts

Since I was going OK with my other entry I thought I would go with another basic build. Again I build this one as a young lad. I had the BOAC boxing, I don't think the decals ever made it onto the original build. I do recall at some stage it was painted with some black rattle can house paint along with a Concorde I had at the time.

The is the MPC issue of the Airfix 747from 1971, the kit I have came bagged and with no decals, the instructions show it was released in American Airlines colours.

Here is the box art from ScaleMates

I will not be correcting the kits many issues but will fix up a few of the easy to correct glaring issues, namely filling the open thrust reverses on the engine nacelles, replacing the wingtip HF probes and adding an APU exhaust.

I started with the easy bits, wings and engines

The doors and clear window section were added

That was when I realised I was missing a couple of doors, the upper deck on and the right-hand No4 door

These were replaced with card inserts. I have some minor sink marks to fill in the flap track fairings as well

Next will be to button up the fuselage and add some nose weight.

Excellent choice Ray. I was lucky enough to have the quite rare Qantas edition of this kit way back in about 1982, however was silly enough to make a real hash of it which was probably a reflection of the skills I had back then - and most probably still possess today. I still have bits and pieces of this kit floating around in my spares box and it always takes me back to that period of innocent youth. This is quite a large kit with relatively minimal parts, it'll be great to see it in the hands of one of this countries most prominent Airliner modellers. I'll be watching keenly from the Sunny North.

Cheers.. Dave

Is it a -100 or -200?

i remember a LOT of years ago seeing the branff orange 747 in a shop and as a nipper i was aware of a place called banff (about 40 miles from me) which even then for some reason i knew was a little place and I asked my mum "why does banff have it's own planes?"..

I'll get me coat and shut the door on the way out.... 😁

Thanks chaps.

This should be a straightforward build with the small parts count. My downfall may be getting a good coverage of white down for the fuselage. I have been struggling lately to get a nice finish without overdoing it and getting runs, etc

Dave,( @Rabbit Leader) I also had the QANTAS boxing about 10 years ago, the decals were shot and I never got it finished as it turned into a putty monster after I attempted to correct the wing-body fairing shape issues.

I do recall this was issued as a -100 and the kit based on drawings for the prototype. That is why the wing-body fairing is missing. All -100s and some early -200s had only 3 windows on the upper deck as per this kit. This is not an issue for me as I will be puttying over the windows and using decals.

Slow progress on his one, the fuselage is together and window filling and sanding underway.

I need to turn my attention to those flap track fairings so I can get the wings finished.

I am not sure if I will rescribe, there is not much to do, but I am sure I will make a dog's breakfast of it.

I'm with you on the rescribing. I prefer not to do it because I always seem to think the end result looks worse than if there simply weren't any panel lines! Plus I always think my scribed lines look too deep in 1/48 so in 1/144 it's definitely best left alone.

Good luck with all that window filling. I find that job tedious on a small airliner like the Caravelle, let alone something as big as this.

Here is a catch-up of my slow progress, filling and sanding of the fuselage mostly done, I still have to add the windscreen which may need some attention.

Some nose weight went in before the fuselage halves went together for the final time

Looking really impressive Ray and your background WIP's are also quite interesting - especially the long bellied Herc.

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks Dave, yes too many projects and an attention span of a 2-month-old puppy. I might finish some of those background projects one day!
