Roundel shadows

Hi All,

I'm building a WNW Sopwith Pup. I'd like to shade the under side of the wings, showing the darker areas cast by the roundels. I'm wondering what to do about the white in the roundels. Would the green have been applied as an overall coat and the roundels afterwards? If so I'm thinking I need only represent two areas of shadow. If not, I take it I'll have three different tones to represent, with the white being the lightest.

Has anyone got a technique for this? (It might not be accurate, but I'm looking to give an impression of the structure of this aircraft.)

Cheers,

Gareth

The shadow effect is something that was quite noticeable when the upper surfaces were left the same as the undersides,  clear doped linen/cloth.   When upper surfaces were covered with green paint, the same shadow effect is barely, if at all, noticeable.

Not a Pup. but a good period study of a Camel with painted upper surfaces.    No roundel shadows, but definitely rib tapes stand out:

If you want to do this effect, regardless of your Pup's paint scheme, I would leave the white portion of the roundel shadow the same as the rest of the underside coloured dope. and just slightly darken where the red and blue shadow would fall.

Jack

Thanks Jack. I think I might give it a whirl, and go for very subtle. It might not be 100% realistic, but it's an interesting technique, and will help give a little impression of the materials the wing is constructed from.

Cheers,

Gareth
