See the other thread in this same section, McCain was shot down in A-4E Bu.No. 149959 AH-300 of VA-163. This aircraft had relatively plain markings and IMHO it would not be too dfficult to reproduce these with some careful markings for the blue areas and some home-printed decals for the codes and unit markings. The main problems would be finding the white numbers for the top of the tail and discovering if the aircraft carried any pilot name on the left side and if so which one. Being a CAG aircraft the name could have well been that of the Horiskany CAG of the period

Does anybody know what weapons load he was carrying on the mission he was shot down?

They were bombing a power station at Hanoi according to reports.

Perhaps a typical load like this one from around the same time? Sorry I don't know the bomb designations.

It was a dive release between 3,000 and 4,000 feet against a structure, so it was almost certainly Mk-80 series weapons.  The question would be was it Mk-82 (500 lbs), Mk-83 (1,000 lbs), or Mk-84 (2,000lbs) bombs.

I've googled out something like that:

The aircraft's modex is "300" but the white two digit code, which goes on the top of the vertical tail and should repeat the "last two" of the modex, is "01" on that sheet.  The picture of it taking the barrier one week prior to the shootdown show that it should be "00" on the tail.

On the same idea is there decals of his Skyhawk on the Forrestal that was hit by the errant Zuni? ( Which in turn set off that inferno?)

Roym, check both links in andyf117's post, those tartan colours make quite an interesting paint scheme. Also, it is not that difficult to DIY these decals in scales other than 1/32, as I prefer 1/72 for Vietnam war models. Cheers

Recently discovered this sheet from Microscale - wonder if the 6" numbers would do the job?
