GordonD
Today is the anniversary of the first successful flight in the United Kingdom. On 27 August 1784 James Tytler demonstrated a hot air balloon by taking off from Comely Gardens in Edinburgh (on the northern edge of Holyrood Park, approximately where my flat is located!) and landing about half a mile away, reaching a maximum altitude of about 350 feet. http://gillonj.tripod.com/edinburghfireballoon/
HP42
...and on 4th October we can celebrate the first English flight by James Sadler who took off from Oxford and landed near Woodeaton about 4 miles away. Also in a 'fire balloon'. That must have been a sight and experience back then! The Beeb did a piece on him 4 years ago. I think it would make a great film as he achieved so much. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-28094742 Edited August 27, 2018 by HP42 added link
