Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire Mk IXc

Hi everyone

 

Once my 1/72 Airfix DC3 Dakota Mk IV is finished I'll be making a start on a 1/32 Tamiya Spitfire Mk IXc. I've built the Mk XIV flavoured version of the phenomenal Tamiya Spitfire and after seeing Navy Bird's build here on this very site I've decided to bump it up on my to build list.

My Spitfire Mk XIV finished as WX*V, TD240, 302 Polish Sqn, Germany 1945.

For this build I will be using the resin goodies from available from Barracudacast..

I'll also utilise some bits and bobs from the Eduard Spitfire Mk IX early interior..

the Sutton QS Harness will be made up from the items available from RB productions..

The IP will be made up from elements of the products available from Airscale..

I'll add the missing rocker cover logos from some etch items from Iconicair..

For references I have the Wings and Wheels Publications Spitfire LF.Mk IX in detail..

and I also have access to the rather splendid resource Spitfire Mk IX & XVI engineered

by Paul H Monforton available from Monforton press

I intend to finish her as EN286, flown by Lt Eric Robinson, 1 Sqn RAAF, Luqa, Malta, June 1943 and for this I'll use the super mask set K32271 produced by Montex.

Thanks mate - TBH you really have to be very ham fisted not to a great model from the Tamiya kit, however like all kits it does benefit from a few additions, just to spice it up like 😁

I'm looking forward to starting it - my Dakota is progressing very nicely and I have ordered most of the resin bits n bobs from Hannants. I already have the Sutton Harness and I also have a spare set of the rocker cover logo's. Hopefully I'll make a start on it next week.

Hi everyone

 

Well I thought I'd make a start on my Spitfire as I'm letting my Dakota sit over night to let the decal softening solutions dry thoroughly...

 

 

..so I made a start on the motor, for those of you who have never seen the Tamiya Merlin 66 straight from the box here it is..

 

First off its component parts..

 

And here it is after a couple of hours work this afternoon (it's only placed into the engine bearer just to make sure everything was put together properly)..

 

 

 

Lovely stuff!

 

I'm going to add a extra detail to the engine as Tamiya have left some rather prominent bits off but out of the box it sure looks good!

Hey everyone

 

Just a couple of pictures to show that I am still plugging (all be it very slowly) away at my Spitfire. I have been concentrating on the cockpit for the past couple of weeks and although I have made some progress there is still a long way to go.

The first couple of pictures show the port and starboard fuselage sides. The look pretty wet coz I've just put an oil wash on them and I still need to remove / tidy them up. I also still need to add the cockpit decals / stencils after I have given them a gloss coat followed by some of the Eduard cockpit additions..

Next up a couple of pictures of the fuselage sides tapped together..

And finally the instrument panel which still needs lots of work / finishing....

I still have to finish the IP, seat, rudder pedals, P8 compass and control stick plus I need to decide on either a Sutton QS or QK seatbelt? The plane that I want to replicate was from 1943 anyone any ideas as to which one would be the correct?

Good to see more progress Iain, I particularly like the brass wiring on the starboard sidewall, although the the whole cockpit is pretty spectacular. 

According to The Spitfire Site the QS harness was introduced in 1946, so I guess the QK is the one to go for.

PS I know what you mean about slow progress on the cockpit, I've also spent a couple of weeks on the Mk V and am just getting to the stage of putting it all together.
