Hello,

 

I have the new 1/48 Tomcat from Tamiya, and what a super model it is. My question is this, I would like to do the scheme from VF-2 Bounty hunters, the colours for this scheme is red, white and blue strips on the side of the fuselage and tail. On Tamiya's decal the blue part of the strip appears to be either a very dark blue, almost black,  Can any one shed some light on this.

Those blue stripes really were pretty dark. Without checking refs, I think they are painted Insignia Blue, which is the same as the blue in the nationality markings.

yes I agree with you, but even the national insignia blue looks black.

National Insignia is a dark blue but by no means is it close to black. If you look at the anti glare stripes around the canopies of both aircraft in the picture, thats black. Then look at the stripe in the VF-2 markings. You can still clearly tell it is blue.

Scale color effect:  it's a real thing.  Look at any Caracal decal.  He obviously tells Cartograf to match US Insignia Red and Insignia Blue to the actual FS595 color.  The resulting decals look like Insignia Maroon and Insignia Black to me.
