Spitfire31
Beautiful modelling, and not least the vehicles. I'm impressed that you went to the extra trouble of articulating their front wheels – does a lot for the sense of life and realism. Inspiring! Kind regards, Joachim

Suprastar3000
Thanks for all your kind words guys. I curse my sausage fingers everyday, so its nice to get such positive comments. Hi David, Unfortunately I'm no expert on the web and found it very difficult to post pictures here. Normally these forums have an attachment feature, but I could not find one here. What I did was to use photobucket. (Web site) and after uploading the picture copy the IMG code (its a URL address thing that photo bucket gives you.) Copy and Paste that code into the post you wish to include the picture. Awfully complicated, so don't worry.

I always try to do that. Just gives it that extra feeling someone has just turned the wheel and got out or about to negotiate an obstacle.

If however you're seeking 100 per cent accuracy then the P-38's left Kingscliffe in July 1944. The 78th Fighter Group were equipped with P-47's at that time so your scenario would be spot on! Look forward to seeing the finished result. P-47s were at Kingscliffe from Jan to Apr 1943 with 56th FG. 20th FG arrived with P-38s 26-8-43 and left on 11-10-45 having re-equipped with P-51s in July '44 The village is Kings Cliffe, but the Air Ministry name is Kingscliffe. Work started on an airfield at King's Cliffe in 1941. Originally known as Wansford, it was RAF Wittering's second relief landing ground. Ratch
Kingscliffe was a Class II airfield and had a FCW4514 tower (watch office 12096/41) for night-fighters and a 16428/40 gymnasium. It was used by the RAF and 8th USAAF as a fighter airfield and was heavily fortified. Four quite distinct, mushroom shaped, circular pillboxes (to Drawing No. 9882/41 by the FC Construction Company) commonly referred to as Oakington or Fairlop pillboxes TL20978 & 021977. They were designed to give all-round fields of fire, sited in mutually supporting pairs as strongpoints. The airfield plan records these as “Mushroom” to Drawing No. TG/14. There were 6 loop-holed fighter dispersal pens. The E-shaped earth traverses were raised over brick-built shelters for air crew and ground staff. The loops resembled Carnot walls in the dry moats of Victorian forts. Several LAA positions, paired sewer pipes in figure-of-eight configuration remain. One of each pair contained the fitting for a Stork mounting to carry twin Lewis or Vickers machine-guns or, with minor modifications, Brownings. Some of the surface 50-man air-raid shelters at King’s Cliffe have been strengthened with concrete girdles, to enable LAA positions to be erected on their roofs. The defence of the airfield was directed from the Battle HQ (BHQ) built to Drawing No.1 1008/41 consisting of a sunken chamber containing office and communications centre, with a raised concrete observation cupola at one end giving all-round visibility. It had two entrances, one through a hatch beside the cupola, and the other up steps from a door below ground level TL026972. It has been suggested that the PBX (Telephone Exchange) to Drawing No. 5648/41 is a conversion of an earlier type of BHQ to Drawing No. 3329/41. There were two groups of concentrated defences, each containing two mushroom pillboxes and a BHQ as well. Spitfire HF Mk. In September it moved to King’s Cliffe, before being sent into storage and conversion to LF.Vb on 03-12-42. It was issued to No 504 Squadron (TM) on 27-08-43. After a brief stay it was re-assigned to No 313 (Czech) Squadron (RY), then on 27-02-44 to No 441 (Canadian) Squadron (9G). Suprastar3000
Excellent stuff Ratch! You're certainly the wright person for all things related to Kingscliffe airfield. Suburb models too. Especially like the blast pens you've made. Very well done. David K has also sent me some pretty fantastic photos of KC during the war and now I'm reconsidering the composition so I can include more landscape features. Something like this: Ratch, really appreciate all your efforts on adding to this thread. Will enjoy going through all that info. Ratch
The blast pens are vac-forms by Amera and are very similar to the type at Kingscliffe

Suprastar3000
Had a few minutes tonight so added that missing tail 'R' number to GA. When they're dry I'll add some weathering.

Suprastar3000
Just a quick update on the diorama progress. Its most been ground work and composition. Heres some pics of the blast pen entrance and bofos trench excluding the multitude of sandbags I will add later.
