Big ideas about a big wing

Recommended Posts

I've been away from this for a while John and just caught up. Sorry to hear about the rib, hope you recover soon. Brilliant workmanship on the bird, and that finish is starting to look the part now.

Nice John, that final shot looks fantastic, you've really pulled this one off beautifully.

Steve.

Thanks Steve, it's the last 'hard' Canberra build I need to do all the others are just run of the mill nose jobs, but it has been fun.

Looks stunning in paint, which makes it look even bigger!

Thanks Roger, she does look rather fetching now she's all shiny, I think it will be interesting to she how she looks when the markings are on, will it emphasis the size of the wing or make it look smaller?

The rib is on the mend, thanks Terry, it's been a fun and relatively straightforward project, nowhere near as hard as I was expecting.

Thanks Growler, I'm lucky enough to have a full set of these photos kindly sent to me, that have proved to be very useful!

Looking great with a lick of paint! not far off now?

Great vidoe of the restored Canberra too, didn't realise the wing flexed so much?

Thanks Mikey, yes they cleverly built in the right amount of anheadral to allow for the weight of the fuel in the wing when the aircraft was in flight, clever people at General Dynamics! How's your PR.9 doing?

@canberra kid Sadly it has stalled again.......the bench is set up and ready togo, however priorities of re-decorating have taken over.

Restoring the original 1930's stairs & bannister has taken over. We've counted at least 5 layers of gloss to sand back against. Will look great when it's done though.

I do have a small fear about the PR.9 though...I have presently Humbrols clear gloss rattle can...and historically when I've used this over Tamiya's colours it reacts really badly and bubbles the paint work. I am reluctant to use it and ruin the work. With that I am tempted  just to leave it a matt finish and complet the landing gear ASAP.

That looks brilliant in silver, are you making models of all the Canberra variations? How many are there?

on a similar note I was an engine Sgt on 100 Sqn at Wyton for four months before being posted onto 51 Sqn just next door. I’m making 1/72 models of each aircraft type I’ve worked on and obviously that’ll include a Canberra. My memory is rubbish these days so could you confirm that there would have been a TT18 on the during June to October 1988. Hopefully there was, the one with the yellow and black bottom.

I know exactly what you're going through, our house is 1934, I suspect there was a national shortage of spirit levels when ours was built! I'm not sure what's going on with the Humbrol, in theory the Acrylic should be ok with both types, but it can be a bit vicious though, I think you would be safest using Tamiya as perdu says

Thanks Sandy, I tend to build R&D or oddities of which there are plenty in the Canberra world, I will have done at least one of all 7 B.57's there are 22 British types I would like to do one of each at some point. If you are just looking at 100 Sqn (why look anywhere else?) you have a choice of B.2, PR.7, TT.18, E.15

Use Tamiya rattle can semi-shiny it works nicely over Tamiya paints of course and I prefer it to  Humbrol's sprays anyway

John she is looking fabulous

Can't wait to see her at Halifax

Thanks! I hope she'll be presentable at that stage, she'll be there either way,

Ours was built in 1935 as part of the great English Electric migration north of specialist workers to help set up GEC in Stafford during the 1920's. The area is commonly known as "the coloney" haha! There are, as your home, some very interesting levelling going on, especially in the kitchen.

Incidentally, our next door neighbours original occupants was a fighter ace.

My home almost made it onto this Luftwaffe recon photo of Stafford. It would have been where "Shaddacher" is written on the list of targets for RAF Stafford.

I'll invest in some Tamiya semi-gloss, see if it works and try to get the PR.9 complete....the stash is growing again too....mwahahahahaha!!

shiny and nice and big and very well built.

i take it that the stencils on the wings are decals?

Thanks brock h (?), yes they are decals, 20 of them, not too bad really, I have a few red lines to add next week, the F's didn't have much in the way of stencils which is good.

Wow, looks very impressive.  I don't think the silver shrunk the wing any!

In the pic in post 287 (up this page), what are the squares on the fuselage above the wing?

bob

Hi Bob

Thanks! If it's the photo I think, the two PR.7's the black square are the filler points for the fuel tanks, the PR.7,PR.9&T.22 had 6 tanks in the fuselage 4 in the wing.
