Convair B-36 Peacemaker - Revell 1/72

@HP42 What will the painting strategy be? Alclad or something acrylic based?

Six cans of Halfords silver I should think.

I'm late to this one, Ced, sorry.

AND I can't get close enough to the bar to deliver these two kegs of Black Sheep.

I'll just leave them on the van then.

Oh, and sip my glass of Laphroaig.

As Ced said, no nose weight needed for the ceiling but for those who will put it on it's landing gear, there is lots of fuselage behind the cockpit section and ahead of the wing gear to keep it from being a tail sitter.

Looking good so far Ced.

Where's the van parked Pete....?

Hannants' car park on a Saturday night I heard.

It's the modelling equivalent of Mad Max: Fury Road in there after midnight apparently: lots of Austin Maxis and Ford Anglias with vacform cow skulls on the bonnet and airbrush flamethrowers, the usual...

Might not be ….Its Cof G not length . Is the tail heavier than the cockpit. Leverage from the  fulcrum ,wing root centre ish on wheels . A kit might look like the B-36. Because its a kit it wont be built like the real B-36 where the parts have Force (weight) and position to the Cof G by design, they all define where it is . CofG is usually close to Centre of Lift . That's why there is a lot of tail sitters in kit world ,nothing at Heathrow .

Catching up tonight on Series 3 of 'Unforgotten' with wine. Mrs B decided we should 'save it up' rather than wait a week for the next episode :(

A great programme with Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar - what a pairing.

I have to admit I got a soft spot for Nicola when she played Ruth in Spooks. Nice woman and a great actress IMHO.

Anyway, where are we?

Right, that's enough zeds , wakey ,wakey !  I want to know....

What is that star shaped tool on the plans next to the tweezers , some sort of gauge ?

As Ced appears to still be in the land of nod, it's a seam scraper.

Keith

Correct, known as 'the Fritag scraper' as Steve recommended it for dealing with 'proud' seams. I like it where there's obviously flash that makes the seam proud or where there's a small step - quick and easy, but watch the other 'arms' as they're prone to gouging the other parts of the model you're not focusing on.

The edges of the turret should be curved too, not straight! You're doing a great job here, Ced!

Ian

Thanks Ian :)

Holy moly, that's sone industrial sanding you needed to get rid of the central seam, Ced :frantic:

Great job with the propellers, too 👏

Ciao

Thanks Giorgio :)  Not too arduous except the LENGTH! With cannons on both ends I'm paranoid I'm going to knock something off (fnaar!)

sheesh Ced, give a bloke a chance.  I only found this the other day... just caught up and you're just about finished.

Really nice work and I particularly enjoyed the frolics and camaraderie in the flight deck

Thanks Hendie :) I wish I was near the end, but there's plenty to do still.

Looking fabulous Ced and coming together very quickly indeed. What will the painting strategy be? Alclad or something acrylic based?

Thanks Phil :) I need to paint it??!! Just kidding...

Alclad is the work of the devil from what I've heard. My plan is to use, maybe, Tamiya for the dark wing panels and AK True Metal paste, airbrushed, for the other bits.

I keep looking at the walkway decals and the problems others have had and thinking 'spray black primer and mask them'.

The plan will come together, I hope.

You're right bzn - there's a lot of plastic in the fin...

That said there's a photo in the 'Photo Chronicle' of RB-36H,51-13730, which was tilted back on its tail by a gust ol wind while on display at Chanute AFB, lllinoii, in May 1957.

More sanding tomorrow. Great.

We also like " Unforgotten ' it's one of the few current TV series we watch. Started watching ' Keeping Faith ' but gave up after one episode, SWMBO is still watching and says it's got better.

Does that scraper gadget also double up as a Ninja throwing thingy?

I had no idea B-36s of any stripe were ever here in Illinois. Unforgivably, it seems it was here (or there, Chanute is 150 miles south of me) until 1991, yet my cruel, unfeeling parents never thought to take me to see it.

Completely agree.

You can get some idea of the sheer complexity of these machines from this account of a cascading systems-failure that led to the crew deciding to land separately from the aircraft:

It's good isn't it? Like you, we gave up on 'Keeping Faith' - too many close ups of pouty lips for me :)

The scraper is indeed nicknamed the 'Ninja Scraper' by our honourable friend (wherever he is). Good tool for this sort of thing.

Seal the fin.

Fill it with Helium.

Thanks Pete. I did ask a local Helium supplier about it but, to be honest, I didn't like his tone of voice :D

Ah, OK. Should be slightly less painful than trying to apply the decals. Probably :)

What a story! Thanks Tony :) I checked the reference and that variant didn't have the jets... goodness knows what problems they would have added.

Thanks bzn :)

Worn out this morning double-checking the seams.

44079072702_e9d11786f6_z.jpg

Mostly passed the 'Stew fingernail test' but I've painted some Citadel Liquid Green Stuff down the seams to be sure. I'll sand that later.

Pondering the canopies. I think brush painting might be easier and more successful that trying to mask all the little panels.

Hmmm :hmmm:

Hand painting the canopy is a go:

Well defined frames so fairly easy to paint between the lines and then run a cocktail stick down the 'outside' if I shook a bit.

Onwards...

Thanks Hendie :) I have some 0.4 and 0.7mm Aizu and, as you say, it's good stuff but not cheap. Sadly:

29199741817_227ca4034b_z.jpg

… they only do 1.0 and 1.5mm that I can see :(

I think I'm going to 'do a Baron' and use the portrait cutter that will come in handy for the bendy walkways around the engines - perhaps I'll get some value out of the PixScan mat.

Liquid green stuff:

44084957642_88b8f0dd5a_z.jpg

Now sanded off and the tailplanes fitted:

43418317224_2e1e511e2e_z.jpg

Nice fit with only a precautionary tape support. The front bay cover was a beautiful fit (after a tiny bit of sanding):

30269551838_01a8c276e8_z.jpg

Other suppliers please note. No, really, try harder guys...

With that I just need to mask before painting so it's been put somewhere safe.

And now for something completely different:

1.2mm high rectangle, width of mat.

Replicate>Mirror Below.

Repeat as needed.

Applying: Use hot hair dryer where necessary to soften film and help shape it round curves.

The fun never stops....
