Airfix 1/48 P-40B questions (Updated)

I just picked up the Airfix 1/48 P-40B at our local Hobby Lobby, with my 40% off coupon.

I bought the Xtradecals sheet X48162 from Hannants, and plan to do the Tomahawk Mk,IIA AH893 'RM.D'.

I also ordered the Eduard P-40B seatbelts set 49787 at the same time, but I think now that these might be the wrong type of seatbelts for an RAF bird. Is that a correct assumption? Do I need a Sutton Harness?

Also, which seat in the kit should I use, the round top one or the square top one? I may have to order one of the Ultracast seats, if that would work better, although I am not looking forward to the added costs.

Maybe I should just put the kit's pilot in the model?

I want to use the camera in the kit, so I was wondering if any of the markings on Xtradecals sheets X48162 or X48163 include markings for a camera-equipped bird? The instruction scans on Hannants aren't clear enough to make out that detail.

HI Larry

the RAF boxing has markings that use the camera AFAIK,  the RM-D option, you might want to ask if someone has those spare

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/1025407-airfix-a05133-curtiss-tomahawk-mk-iib

RM-D is on this sheet

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48162

Also, I think some of the schemes on the Xtradecal sheet are from the Ducimus guide

https://boxartden.com/reference/gallery/index.php/Modeling-References/Camoflage-Markings/12-Tomahawk-Airacobra

these are some 26 sq pics, and you can see the camera ports,  so I'd just ask if some has the RM-D decals leftover ;)

Thanks Troy, for the very informative reply. I think my first option will be to try to get the RM-D from the Tomahawk kit, especially since I wouldn't have any use for all the extra decals on the Xtradecal sheet.

Hi Larry

Got me thinking, there have been threads here on Army Co-operation Tomahawks before..... I was able to remember that @Dave Fleming  posted some info (makes a google search easier "britmodeller tomahawk fleming camera" is what I used)

this maybe of interest if you have not seen it before?

from

the photo link here are to a beta IWM site

but it gives the photo reference numbers.

And this will give Dave a notification, and he might have some additional info as well.

Thanks Troy,

I had seen that recce Tomahawk photo before. This time I made sure to download it & save it. Love the detail of the camera mounting hardware & "black boxes". I would love to see a 1/32 Tomahawk kit, with all that detail incorporated in it.

Have you seen the Colour Conundrum article entitled "US Equivalent Colours for the RAF 1938-1942 Part 2", in the August 2018 issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling? It has color profiles of the left, bottom & top of RM-D. It lists Vallejo paints for the paint scheme, but I will try to do it with Testors Model Master enamels. What is really interesting is the mismatched colors on the camera access panel, like it came from a different aircraft.

I did put a Wanted post up for those decals on the Wanted Subforum here.

The wing that NEAM has shows colours not a million miles from standard RAF colours, after 40 years in the elements and an attempt at ‘restoration’ . There is a photo during recovery that hints tje brown areas were actually painted over in ‘mixed’ grey

I'm not a P-40 expert but I do know that RAF Tomahawks had Sutton harnesses fitted.

HTH in a small way,

Tim,

Thanks for that, I think I have the seat belts sorted out.

Now I just need verification if the plane I am doing would have had the rounded top seats or the square top seats.

I found a set of Ultracast Curtiss P-40 seats in my stash (48037). They have the round seat top and the Sutton Harness and are said to be for the B-M variants.

I am not sure if they are correct for my Curtiss Tomahawk IIa.

You want the squareback for a Tomahawk H-81

Thanks for that confirmation. :worthy:

Considering that ordering just the seat would cost me over half what the whole kit cost, I think I will go with the kit seat, and the Eduard Sutton harnesses my friend gave me.
