Airfix 1/72 DC3 Dakota Mk IV

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone

It seems that lately I've been in the modelling doldrums, I've started many kits but I have just lost interest as the build has gone on, my 1/48 Lysander and 1/32 Spitfire being prime examples, in fact the last kit I finished was my 1/48 Defiant which I believe was completed a couple of months ago..

..So I've been off work for the past week with Bursitis (swollen elbow) and to be honest I was feeling a little hacked off. Anyway I was routing around the work shop and I dug out my 1/24 Hawker Typhoon and in a fit of enthusiasm I decided to spend some time on it, I'm detailing the motor and needed some plastic struct so I nipped down to the Kernow model rail centre in Cambourne. Looking around the shop I noticed, nestled amongst a load of other kits an Airfix 1/72 DC3 Dakota Mk IV....

I've read good reviews about this kit and it was only £22.99 so in a fit of passion I bought it. This happened on Thursday morning and here is where I am as of now, 15:35 on a rainy Saturday afternoon...

..I haven't been this enthusiastic about a model for a long time, the kit itself is brilliant and although it doesn't just fall together it is very satisfying to build and it certainly looks the part. The doors are only tacked on at the moment to help when it comes to painting, I'll finish her as G-AGKN. The build has been OOB other than four bits of masking tape to represent seatbelts  and I have used the Eduard masking set CX-401 as its just easier than masking by hand.

Later on today I'll go around all the seams to see what needs attending too, carry out any re scribing (there shouldn't be too much) and get some paint down.

Cheers all

Iain

Hi everyone

I've started cleaning up the joins and decided that the 8 x lumps on the wing route and engine nacelle are a little over scale and as I had already decided to replace the fuel filler caps with some resin replacements from the Archers Fine Transfers set No SD99003.

..So I have carefully removed the lumps (what are they?) and noticed that I still have a little work to do on the wing route before I can re scribe the panel lines, in fact because I've opted to remove the 'bumps' it should make the re scribing so much easier.

Well that's me done for now - the wife will be home shortly after a short break 'up country' with family and she has insisted that we go down the pub! Bless her.

Cheers

Morning all

After cleaning up the joints / seams on my DC3 and having looked at several photos I've decided not to not to re apply the 8 x lumps on and around the wing root area because I just can't see them..

The amount of clean up required has actually been fairly limited which in turn has meant that any re scribing that was needed has also been kept to the bare minimum as I'm rubbish at re instating line details!..

I have however used the Archer Fine Transfers to replicate the fuel filler caps as they are quite prominent in all the pictures I've seen..

..I've given her her first coat of paint and this has highlighted a couple of areas that need further attention, the seam along the top fuselage and a little more work to remove the lumps on the wing root area, but other than that I'm happy with how she's coming along.

Cheers all and have a great Sunday.

Morning, Ian.

That's coming together nicely.

(Did I say I like the Defiant?)

The BBMF Dakota was buzzing around Waddington during the week. A glorious sight.

The bumps are probably fairings over fuel tank vents. Probably not worth worrying about.

This looks a lot more detailed than the old Airfix 'Dak'.

Cheers

Really good progress you are making. I look forward to seeing the plane finished. I have a strong memory of seeing my father fly away on a New Zealand Airforce DC3 when I was very young. So I have that kit in my stash to do in NZ colours.

...and I'll follow along if I may. My mum nearly came to grief in one of these in March 1965 - VR-AAA of Aden Airways.

I don't suppose anyone out there would be able to help me with producing some decals for this airframe? I have photos, and would be happy to pay...

Apologies if I'm hijacking the thread - please feel free to move elsewhere if I'm in the wrong.

Enjoying your build and following with interest.

Cheers,

Nick.

Hiya Pete

Thank you very much! The Defiant is another gem from Airfix and it really builds up onto a great looking model - I had a blast making it.

You lucky chap, I haven't been to Waddo for a very long time, in fact I think it was in the mid 90's and to see the BBMF Dak bombing about would have been a real blast. The new tool DC3 is lovely, the fit is great and it really captures the look of the real thing, I'm not going to re instate the vents on the wings as they just don't appear that pronounced on the real thing let alone in 1/72 scale!

Cheers

Hey Greg

Thanks for the kind words mate - when you come to build yours you will see that it really is a lovely kit.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone

This evening I've managed to finish off painting my Dakota. In all it was a fairly painless experience the only pain was masking off the de-icing boots on the main wings and stabilizers, that's an hour of my life I wont get back!

I might start decaling later on to night but failing that I'll make a start tomorrow.

That looks great looking Dak - love them all camo'd up.  Planning a vacation next year to see the Dakotas over Normandy https://www.daksovernormandy.com/  and a tour of the beaches

Thanks mate - I hope you have a great time in France, its something me and the wife plan to do in the near future.

Hi everyone

One last update for tonight. I have managed to get the main decals onto my Dakota and I have to say that the Airfix decals have been a dream to work with.

I think that I'm going to keep any weathering to the barest minimum as I really like the look of how it is now and it hasn't had a matt coat yet.

Cheers

Hi everyone

I was hoping to get this finished this weekend  but I had to work yesterday so I haven't had that much time in the workshop. Its 98% complete but I still have some touch ups to do here and there because in the final stages of assembly I made several school boy errors, however I should be able to finish her tomorrow..

..the next time you see her will be in the RFI.

Great model!

I am planning to do a BOAC wartime Dakota myself. Though with a Union Jack instead of the Speedbird.

Hey Nils

Thanks bud. It’s  a great kit from Airfix and a real joy to put together. Will you be doing a WIP for your build?

cheers

Most likely. We are a group of 6 modellers who meet for modelling nights and weekends irregularly. We will meet next during Christmas, and all will be modelling the Airfix Dakota in some variant. I will hopefully include photos of all the models in my WIP.
