Su-27IB (T-10V-1) in 1/72 scale - Italeri Su-34 and Revell/Zvezda Su-27SM conversion

Recommended Posts

As I was looking around to find some reference pictures for one of my ongoing projects namely Su-27M (T-10M 701, 703, 709 and 711) I have landed the Ken's Su-27IB conversion progress page. Then I decided to launch a parallel project for T-10V1 conversion using one of my Revell Su-27SM (I have 60+ pieces of it 🙂) and Italeri Su-34 (currently only 4 pieces in hand) kits. The main idea is to join Su-34 nose and Su-27 rest.

Next I will add some pictures of my work in progress.

Serkan

Here are the upper surfaces of Su-27 and Su-34 kits... The green line is the cut line for Su-34.

136.jpg

And these are the lower parts of both kits...

137.jpg

The dashed lines show approximate cut lines.

I have started this conversion first by removing the front fuselage part of Su-34 kit.

143.jpg

The spine of Su-34 is obviously wider and higher than Su-27 one.

281.jpg

With a little surgery this can be easily fixed.

144.jpg

Now the planform seems ok,..

145.jpg

but the side view not yet!..

146.jpg

The first fit test of Su-34 front fuselage to Su-27 rear part...

147.jpg

Now it is time to correct spine shape...

148.jpg

And here is the finished shape. Many other Su-27 parts have been also attached to check part fits. Please note that the slat root slots have been also opened in Su-34 front fuselage part.

149.jpg

The bird seems to appear slowly 🙂

150.jpg

And the bottom view...

138.jpg

The main wheel bays are needed to be taken from Su-27 kit with a little surgery as well as the cannon details...

The more pictures will be later...

Thanks lot Vultures1. I think Revell/Zvezda kit is very well detailed and easy to modify. I have several Heller Su-27UB kits but the surface detail is not as good as Revell/Zvezda has.

Yes I fully agree Ken. This will be a bit challenging to modify intakes.

Returning back to progress, the areas to be improved in front fuselage upper half are;

  1. Wing root/front fuselage intersection including MLG Bay details.
  2. Wing LERX.
  3. Canard fuselage connection with fillet.
  4. Cannon details
  5. Straight-edged fillet added to the chine to be removed/rounded.

140.jpg

First starting with cannon...

141.jpg

With a small surgery I have removed the cannon area from Su-27 donor and transplanted to Su-34.

142.jpg

and a bit putty and support to heal the wounds...

151.jpg

Now the cannon area seems better...

152.jpg

The next implant is the MLG Bay and LERX areas. Here are the cut lines from top view...

153.jpg

And MLG Bay details from bottom...

154.jpg

Su-34 front fuselage before modification:

155.jpg

... and after modification:

156.jpg

157.jpg

Now the modifications 1, 2 and 4 listed above were completed. The canard root fillet and removal of straight edged fillet to chine modifications will be done after lower part modifications.

The more pictures will be posted soon.

Next step is to modify Su-34 front fuselage lower surface.

I started first removing nose section of Su-27 from the rest.

158.jpg

and here is the cut line for Su-34 lower part:

159.jpg

The Su-27 air intake splitter plate stands will be added to Su-34 part...

164.jpg

One side has been already glued...

165.jpg

And as usual part fit check after modification:

166.jpg

Top view...

167.jpg

and bottom view...

168.jpg

Hence the upper and lower Su-34 nose parts are now together, I can remove straight edge fillet added to the chine.

169.jpg

Please note that I have replaced Su-34 rear spine with Su-27 one to have perfect fit to rear fuselage part.

The next modification is to add fillet to canard root area on fuselage fairing...

170.jpg

done...

171.jpg

Also I am not happy with drag chute door in Su-34 (as I did significant sanding and grinding at that area). Su-27 donor part helped me to improve this...

160.jpg

161.jpg

162.jpg

163.jpg

Next step will be modifications of VTPs (Su-27 to Su-27UB) ...

Here is the comparison of Revell/Zvezda Su-27, Italeri Su-34 and Heller Su-27UB fins:

282.jpg

Italeri Su-34 fin has reasonably good size but the rudder shape is not correct.

283.jpg

Su-27 fin has to be extended to Su-27UB size...

284.jpg

The shape can be corrected by inserting plastic cards...

172.jpg

173.jpg

Performing the similar modification on the right fin:

174.jpg

The result is not so bad :)

175.jpg

176.jpg

177.jpg

The next step will be the intakes...

  • 3 months later...

Last few months I was a bit busy designing a web page (I have uploaded my all work on progress pictures to my web site and linked directly from there) and some house renovation tasks assigned by my wife to me...

After a long break, here are some progress on intake modification.

As first attempt, I have started to modify Su-27 intake.

288.jpg

and the result is seen as below:

289.jpg

From the reference pictures the shape of diverter of Su-27IB seems a bit different than Su-27. With my best guess it should look like this:

301.jpg

After modification the new diverters are now as shown below:

Although the intakes look not so bad, still I was not very happy with the result. As a solution I have decided to use Trumpeter's Su-34 intakes. The comparison of modified Su-27 and Trumpeter Su-34 is given below:

306.jpg

307.jpg

As the Trumpeter Su-34 kit is too expensive to use it's parts as donor, I have decided to "clone" the intake parts:

290.jpg

291.jpg

292.jpg

Only some parts of Su-34 intake is needed to convert Su-27 into SU-27IB one:

293.jpg

294.jpg

Now the result seems better than my first attempt:

295.jpg

296.jpg

Adding the splitter plates:

297.jpg

298.jpg

299.jpg

The next step will be the nose landing gear bay modification...

Brilliant work Serkan! I'm really impressed in particular by how you have aligned and blended all of the replaced parts so well, especially given the amount of modification, 10/10. Rather difficult and you have made it look easy. I look forward to more.

Cheers,

David

Hello David,

Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. I am very close to finish this project.

I have also had a look your ongoing Viper projects. I have 4 Vipers (all in 1:48 scale and one of them is the Skunkwork/Kinetic F-16XL Ship 2 "double seater") waiting on bench to be completed.

Today I am lying in bed due to heavy flu. Hopefully I can post new progress pictures in the following days of this week.

I can share today only 3 view drawings/artwork I finished last month. Any comments/improvement proposals are welcome. I know that the camo edges should be transient  but it is really big amount of work to do in vector graphics.

Regards

Serkan

Here are the next modifications in NLGB area;

First the comparison of Trumpeter and Italeri kits...

316.jpg

317.jpg

Again I have cloned Trumpeter NLGB...

323.jpg

328.jpg

The nose landing gear assembly is also very poor in Italeri. It will be "cloned" from Trumpeter as well...

Cheers

The cockpit of Italeri kit is not well detailed. Therefore I have decided to use "Pavla" Su-34 resin detail set (C72006) to improve this area:

331.jpg332.jpg333.jpg

Now it looks much better 🙂

Here is the comparison of Trumpeter NLG assembly versus Italeri:

334.jpg

and close view to Trumpeter one:

335.jpg

when assembled to kit, it looks much better than before modification:

325.jpg

327.jpg

The wheels and mud guard will be used from Armory Wheels (ARW72035) resin parts...

Thanks for your kind words Stuart.

I was waiting for Zvezda's new SU-27UB kit for Su-35UB conversion and finally this kit has been released. I have ordered three kits and they have newly arrived. Impatiently I have started the kit conversion which I report here. The kit has very nicely detailed vertical fins and early slats (left and rightmost parts shown below) which are needed for Su-27IB conversion:

336.jpg

340.jpg

Also I have "cloned" canards from Revell/Zvezda Su-33 kit:

341.jpg

The next step will be the final fit test before gluing the parts together...

  • 2 weeks later...

During last several weeks I have received many private messages asking about the availability of modified parts of this Su-27IB kit-bashing.

Then I decided to make molds to duplicate the parts. First I have started to divide the upper front half into two pieces to make molding easier:

621.jpg

Then I have prepared the outer skin molds of fuselage halves:

622.jpg

And similarly the inner mold halves:

623.jpg

Now the molds are ready for test casting:

625.jpg

The results seem not so bad 🙂

626.jpg

The next step will be the canopy/windshield and engine inlet moldings which will be a bit challenging... 👷‍♂️

Cheers

After a very long break on this project here I am back with major progress. Hence I need several copies of the canopy I need to clone the clear parts. The original canopy has been used as master form and this silicone mold was prepared:

1013.jpg

Using UV resistant crystal clear epoxy resin I have casted the part:

1014.jpg

The result is not so bad.

1015.jpg

Here above right to left: original canopy, casted with PUR and with clear epoxy respectively.

The next step is to clone NLG bay doors and strut from Trumpy Su-34.

"Not so bad" is quite an understatement from the quality of your clear cast part shown here!  Can you elaborate on your process and materials? It appears you have a 2-part silicone mold, I'm curious what clear resin product you're using and whether you're using a pressure chamber or other methods to get such a pristine part.
