Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted August 3, 2018 Share Posted August 3, 2018 This one really takes me back to my childhood, I built the Fearless in the 70's and I recall how cool it was at it had helicopters and landing craft. I am sure no paint was harmed in the build but there may have been excess tube glue used. Mine kit is the 1975 rebox of the 1968 tooled kit. I have not built a 1/600 Airfix kit since the 70s so this will be interesting. it will be OOB and there will be paint this time around. The ship has a very interesting service history and is referenced as 'Fearless featured in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me as the ship that picks up Bond's escape pod'. My contribution was a toss up between this one and the HMS Ajax, another childhood build. Depending on how I go here it may get started as well. Not much like a helicopter, that being said I must resist the urge to try and fix it up. I googled the Fearless kit and found one that had been fixed up with etch. Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted August 3, 2018 Author Share Posted August 3, 2018 After I created the build thread I managed a couple of hours on the build (while watching some great Mach Loop videos on Youtube ) Here is a shot of the sprues (as requested by @BIG X ), well after I had started the many assembly. I started on the Well Deck, some nice sink maks which I will leave alone The hull went together with a little help from some tape and clamps And I found the kit was moulded in 1967, I suppose it first appeared in the 1968 catalogue The upper superstructure was assembled and some test fitting of the major components so far and some more pesky sink marks on the flight deck which I will leave and spot the helicopters over them. 10 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've yet to find out if the date stamped from the mould was always the same or if it changed - a lot of the kits have no date at all. Apparently, dates on the mould and in the catalogue reflected the latest 'intention' for release of the kit but may not have been matched by what actually then happened. Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted September 5, 2018 Author Share Posted September 5, 2018 Well, I thought I had done a more recent update, but it is not so. @Dermo245 I loved the box art on this kit when I saw it in my youth, one of those attention grabbers. @Ventora3300, I think I have the sink marks sorted, she is now bathworthy On to the update, plenty of glueing, filling, sanding and painting has gone on since the last update Getting the propulsion sorted and the well deck I painted the decks as best I could figure from the box art. I plucked a colour form the paint collection. It took a couple of goes to get the deck paint off the bulkheads On to some superstructure components and the landing craft A test fit of the sub-assemblies Some hull painting On to adding some more fiddley bit and some detail painting I guess. 7 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I had time at a local club display to do some work. The local model shipwrights had their display and us plastic guys came along for support. I spent most of Saturday arvo filling, sanding and touching up the bost and other bits. Some more filling of sinkholes, helos this time More work on the superstructure Landing craft cleaned up and paint started More work on the superstructure A lot more done, boats, cranes and boat hanger offer thing started to be fitted. I built mine way back in 1969 in Singapore, and thought it was an amazing ship. I particularly liked the well deck(?) where the landing craft go, so it is great to see this one come to life! I was just after some colours to break up the grey/green of the build Chewy. Boat colours, fittings, doors, cranes, etc. There may not be much of a variation but from the box art there are a few things that have colour that the basic instructions don't mention. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
