Hampdens with ASV

Recommended Posts

I'm sure I've seen a topic here with photos of Hampdens with ASV radar but I've been through loads of pages of search results and not found it. It doesn't help that if I search for ASV on it's own I get no results found - strange when I've been posting recently in a topic on Hudsons with ASV.

Please can anyone tell me where to find the thread.

Of less immediate interest but also useful would be clues as to why search doesn't work for me,

Thanks,

Ross

I don't recall ever seeing a Hampden fitted with any kind of radar. I'll have to do a search.

Hi

nice photo and it shows how the pilots canopy slid back over the fuselage fighter style on rails

I must remember this fact on my future model

hmm .....   maybe a 489 Sqn hampden TB with ASV for attacking u-boats

    and not a canadian a/c i think

     thanks

Re the top picture, there is something fitted between the engine and fuselage on the starboard wing.  It looks like a rack for small stores, possibly small bombs or flares.  Can anyone confirm what it is?

Hi All

So does anyone have any code & serial matches for either a 455 or 489 Sqn aircraft ?

sorry should have been more specific

  any  ASV equipped a/c

  i.e.

  455   i/d     D june 43

( just found out L4105 was D in sep 43)

it looks like it is possible to make out the asv mounting points on the nose, had the aerials been removed recently

  489   i/d     R or S or T  sep 43

   cheers

For 455 and 489 Sq Hampdens, yes.  For radar-equipped ditto, no.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all.

In AIR 25, the apendices for 18 Group, there are usually mentioned whether the aircraft carried radar/or search equippement. From AIR 25/341, apedndics for the month of September 1943, I've got these three Hampdens from 489 Squadron carrying ASV Mk. II: AD383/J, AN164/R and AT249/W.

No luck with 455 Squadron for this same month.

...and for August 1943 I found these two 455 Squadron machines equipped with ASV Mk. II: L4105/D on 2 August and P5390/O on 30 August. Ref. AIR 25/430 and Squadron ORB AIR 27/1897.
