On Soyuz T-7 Savistskaya became the second woman in space; she was selected because NASA had announced that Sally Ride would become the first American female to go into orbit and the Soviets wanted to beat her

On Soyuz T-12 Savitskaya became the first woman to fly in space twice and to carry out an EVA. NASA had recently announced the crew of STS-41G, in which Sally Ride would become the first woman to fly twice, and Kathy Sullivan would make the first female EVA. Again her selection was purely to claim both of these records for the USSR.
