Dermo245
And we're off! Like so many of us, Airfix the Golden Years represented my formative years in the hobby. And while I've mostly moved on to modern kits, I've still got that nostalgia bug. I never built this kit back in the day but always liked its design, the twin engines and big gun. You can read more about the plane here. I can't remember where I picked this up but there she is in all her box art glory.. Lawzer
Yes! I love this aircraft. Have been looking for 1 in 1/48 for while but I'll be watching this with interest - who knows I may be tempted by a 1/72 one And @theplasticsurgeon, that's a nice build!
Dermo245
Thanks everyone - might try a small rescribe and will scratch up a smaller gun than the 75mm monster. Nice build there @theplasticsurgeon !
Smudge
Nice choice. Great box art on that one. Built one myself as a lad, but I did use the 'big gun' of course 1

Dermo245
Looks like everyone wants the big gun so - might have to rethink my plans! 😂 So here's the latest, just some little jobs to improve this one where possible. Drilling the engine exhaust vents (and a minor rescribe under way too) Airfix Hs 129 build 3 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr And mid-way through opening up the radiators (?) under the wings.. Airfix Hs 129 build 4 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr There won't be much visible in the tiny cockpit but would be rude to have blank walls in there. (rivet counters/Hs-129 experts should probably leave the room now) Airfix Hs 129 cockpit_1 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr Airfix Hs 129 cockpit 2 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr Will also add a floor and bulkhead, more on that later. Thanks very much! I try my best to update older kits where possible and it's not always the neatest! I use a scribing tool by RB Productions which I find great to use, really precise and controlled. Radu who runs the business is a top bloke and great to deal with. Hope that helps. Dermot 1
Dermo245
Some more done.....internal ribs for the u/c bays which won't really be seen when it's finished. Airfix Hs 129 build 5 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr So time to talk about big guns! The glorious Airfix box art has a pair of Henschel's over some battlefield, most likely Eastern Front, going all 'Brrrrrt' on a Russian Convoy in true 1970's comic book style... Airfix Hs 129 Box art by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr The B-3 model had the 75mm cannon and there's a picture of it on this link. Problem is, the way Airfix has the barrel moulded, it just looks way too long. After a short while on the Inter-web searching 'Big German Guns' (mind your spelling ), I found this image and line drawing of the gun and loading mechanism. Airfix Hs 129 build 6 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr Using the trusty Mk1 eyeball and shaky camera technique, I offered up the gun and mounting to the drawing....Hmmm........looks a bit long Airfix Hs 129 build 7 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr But shortening the barrel by a few mm, I think that looks much more realistic. GREG DESTEC
Good call Dermot! I always thought the cannon looked too long. Crack on it's coming together now. Cheers Greg

It was niggling me that the Airfix kit seems to have a gun far too long and I had seen pictures where the thicker part at the end of the barrel (flash suppressor?) was just in front of the aircraft nose rather than away out front. I think you have got it right. Also, much less likely to get pinged off while being painted or flying round the room!
AdrianMF
I think Airfix must have erred in a direction that pleased schoolboys everywhere! Mind you, the drawing and the photo don't quite seem to match up either - maybe it had a variety of different muzzle fitments? I see that we will have to amend the pitch-side chant of "BIG GUN, BIG GUN" to "Relatively large gun, ..." Regards, Adrian 1

Rabbit Leader
Looking really good Dermot, its such a brute of an attack aircraft and Airfix look as it they got this one pretty right (save for the long gun barrel!).
