1/72 Henschel Hs 129 - DONE

Recommended Posts

And we're off!

Like so many of us, Airfix the Golden Years represented my formative years in the hobby.  And while I've mostly moved on to modern kits, I've still got that nostalgia bug.

I never built this kit back in the day but always liked its design, the twin engines and big gun. You can read more about the plane here.

I can't remember where I picked this up but there she is in all her box art glory..

According to the very helpful box, this is the 1975 edition

Everything there but the decals are shot so will use spares instead.

Looks like everyone wants the big gun so - might have to rethink my plans! 😂

So here's the latest, just some little jobs to improve this one where possible.

Drilling the engine exhaust vents (and a minor rescribe under way too)

And mid-way through opening up the radiators (?) under the wings..

There won't be much visible in the tiny cockpit but would be rude to have blank walls in there. (rivet counters/Hs-129 experts should probably leave the room now)

Will also add a floor and bulkhead, more on that later.

Thanks for looking!

Look’n good Dermot, nice job with the scriber - very neat from what I can see.

Cheers.. Dave

Yeah a lot neater than the troughs I end up doing ;)

@Dermo245 what do you use for the scribing?

Thanks very much! I try my best to update older kits where possible and it's not always the neatest!

I use a scribing tool by RB Productions which I find great to use, really precise and controlled. Radu who runs the business is a top bloke and great to deal with.

Hope that helps.

Some more done.....internal ribs for the u/c bays which won't really be seen when it's finished.

So time to talk about big guns!

The glorious Airfix box art has a pair of Henschel's over some battlefield, most likely Eastern Front, going all 'Brrrrrt' on a Russian Convoy in true 1970's comic book style...

The B-3 model had the 75mm cannon and there's a picture of it on this link. Problem is, the way Airfix has the barrel moulded, it just looks way too long. After a short while on the Inter-web searching 'Big German Guns' (mind your spelling ), I found this image and line drawing of the gun and loading mechanism.

Using the trusty Mk1 eyeball and shaky camera technique, I offered up the gun and mounting to the drawing....Hmmm........looks a bit long

But shortening the barrel by a few mm, I think that looks much more realistic.

What do we think?

Yes, Dermot. It was niggling me that the Airfix kit seems to have a gun far too long and I had seen pictures where the thicker part at the end of the barrel (flash suppressor?) was just in front of the aircraft nose rather than away out front. I think you have got it right. Also, much less likely to get pinged off while being painted or flying round the room!

I think Airfix must have erred in a direction that pleased schoolboys everywhere! Mind you, the drawing and the photo don't quite seem to match up either - maybe it had a variety of different muzzle fitments?

I see that we will have to amend the pitch-side chant of "BIG GUN, BIG GUN" to "Relatively large gun, ..."

Regards,

Adrian
