Helidriver
Hi, This is my first attempt at a ship in a very very long time. My mother in law bought me the 1/200 Missouri and Bismarck for Christmas, so I figured I'd get this one as a trial run. The obligatory box shots: Started by removing the bow crest and torpedo tube. Followed by the life preserver cages on the stern. Cut the barrels off the 6 pounder sponson guns and replaced them with the supplied metal ones: Reshaped the rudder: And finally assembled the hull. That's it for this time. I have a feeling this build will take a while! Thanks, Ken Edited July 25, 2018 by Helidriver
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Off to a good start. The surface detail on the hull looks good. It's a weird scale, but if everything needed is in the box it should matter little I will look forward to seeing this develop!
gamevender
It's a re-box of the old Revell kit with sort of a Pontos upgrade kit added in. When "done up", it is very nice indeed. Please don't do it in the all grey scheme. The pre-war white and buff is so much more appealing. And by the by, your MIL must think a lot of you to to pony up for not just one, but for two 1/200 scale kits! Congrats! Helidriver
Thank you! I'm planning on doing it on the 1899 scheme 2b, with white hull and buff superstructure. Small update today: Installed the bow torpedo tube: And the 6 pounder sponson guns. Ken
bbudde
I'm in here. Built the Revell kit with 13 or so. I liked the details and it was big with 45 cm. Good start on that. Cheers
Bugle07
There's a lot of goodies in that box, good work with them so far. Resin, wooden decks, brass barrels, pe! Very nice! Will be watching with interest. Geoff
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Theres a build of this in a recent Fine Scale Modeler ? If that helps ? Dennis
Helidriver
Thanks Dennis, I just saw that article and it gives some good pointers. I've been busier than normal at work, so progress is slow... I sanded the deck planks in preparation for the deck veneers. Drilled out some more gun barrels... And hollowed out the gun mounts in the superstructure. Thanks for looking, Ken Edited August 26, 2018 by Helidriver
Helidriver
It's amazing how much life interferes with these projects... Got some PE work done. The bilge keels were a major pain, luckily they will be UNDER the ship... The covers for the sponson guns were bent over a paintbrush and then installed. Worked pretty good. Thanks for looking! Helidriver
Wow, I knew this would take a while, but it's amazing how much time a 16-month-old baby girl takes away from modeling. Anyways, got the hull painted red on the bottom. Waiting for this to dry, and then spraying white on the top half of the hull. Thanks for watching. Will try to get some more work done on a regular basis. Ken
Getting Old
Children are a lifetime investment worth the investment though. Model is coming along nicely too 👍
Helidriver
Oh boy this is taking a while.. Finally got the white hull painted. As usual, the white isn't covering very well. At first I thought I'd give it another coat, then I thought I kinda like it. Gives it that worn, ship look maybe? Thought? DarylH
The key to a good white paint job is to use white primer first. I use Tamiya's white primer and it's excellent. You can top coat it with any kind of white or clear coat. That being said, I think your hull looks pretty good as a worn white finish.

From my experience, when babes come along the modelling goes away for some years and starts to make an appearance when they don't need you so much, like getting a mobile/ pc or games console. Consider yourself lucky if you an get away with it. Nice to see movement on this old girl. Stuart
Helidriver
Well, it's been almost a year since the last post and much have changed since then...but not on the model. With social distancing in effect its easier to get some work done on this thing, so here goes: I have done some research, and it seems the Olympia was kept in pretty good shape when in the white peace time livery, so I'll be keeping weathering to a minimum. Guns: Some of the superstructure is assembled and painted Buff Hull is painted and ready to be closed up Super glued the nuts for the stand to the inside of the hull. Hoping to mount in on the stand at a later date, after more is finished and the hull is completely closed up. Test fitting the bow and stern decks. Bow details roughly painted as it will be covered by the veneer later on. Stern cracked open, but that should be an easy fix. Starting to look like something now! Good thing this kit comes with add on wooden decks...the originals has some pretty bad gaps! Thanks for looking, and stay safe out there!! Helidriver
Started with the wood decking today. Definitely important to dry fit multiple times before removing the plastic backing. The veneers for the most part fit really well, and they stick to the plastic without any issues. Certainly makes it look better than paint... My first test subject...the bridge deck. Bow... After doing the upper decks I test fitted the bridge deck. Looks pretty cool Ken Edited April 19, 2020 by Helidriver
DarylH
So glad to see you're back on this. It's a great subject and you're doing it justice.
Helidriver
The saga continues. Finished most of the wood veneers, just some detail areas to go. The hammock racks turned out to be a major headache / disaster The walkway on top wouldn't fit no matter what I tried. That's going to be a challenging walk in high seas... Started some of the detail work as well... Overall it's been a fairly easy build, but the instructions are marginal at best. Ken
Helidriver
Seems like most of the heavy lifting is complete, and only detail work remains. However, there is a LOT of detail work in this ship. Added the superstructure guns. Some more details added on the bow deck. PE wheel house coming together and dry fitted Primed and painted, its pretty clear that more coats will be needed Assembling the white metal, brass and PE 6lbs guns. And finally started to remove some detail from the funnels in preparation for PE details going back on. Thanks for looking! Ken

Helidriver
The detail work continues. 6lb guns in position Only after installing did I realize that the skylights are supposed to be painted mahogany color...oh well, will get to that later. Bridge deck installed as well. It has a bit of nose up pitch to it. I'll blame the veneer for adding the thickness to the deck... Wheelhouse dry fitted. Life rafts installed. Turret base with anchor chains taped out of the way Base installed on the front deck. Bow is starting to look busy... Wheel house all painted up with the veneer in place. Ready for PE railings and stairs... The kit supplied display base is of rather questionable quality, so I made up a new one... Seems like a long slogging match with this one. Thanks for looking.
