CedB
Thanks Bill, decent of you It'll be an interesting experiment and make me decide one way or the other, once and for all! Future brushed on to this bit: Flickr I need to watch my Future/Klear and brush - the stuff can 'set' in the brush (even though I wash it out) and leave little white lumps. They come off OK but not from under the transfers! Comparison part I. Here are the three W/T stencils on the underwing, untreated on the left and on Future on the right: Is that silvering? I say not - look at this close up of the untreated side: No bubbles, just shiny. The serial is different as you can see here: … but look at the red stencil just below it on the 'treated' side. Shiny still. Anything shiny has had MicroSet brushed onto it so I need to leave it alone now. I have DullCote ready if needed!
Brandy
I remember building an Airfix Harrier in my youth, the first glossy finish aircraft I ever built. I put the transfers on as usual, then glossed it. I was mortified to see the change in colour under the transfers, they stood out a mile! Martian
I always varnish before decaling and lay down a thin coat of gloss varnish to seal the decals in afterwards. Don't worry about the difference in sheen at the moment the final matt coats will sort that out. Martian 👽 4
keefr22
See what Bill said above in post No. 300 Ced? He's right you know....!! Keith 1
The Spadgent
Couldn’t agree more with everyone’s posts. Do what feels right. Looking great though Ced. John.
CedB
Thanks Ian, Martian, Keith and Johnny OK, I've learned my lesson and will from now on pay attention to my learned friends and not that bloke on YouTube - GLOSS BEFORE TRANSFERS - got it. Why? After the brushed matt coat of W&N had dried, the non-Futured bits were still shiny and the glossed bits were not: A quick splurge of Testors Dullcote has sorted most of them: … but a few needed a second coat and she now needs another coat of matt when that dries: But wait, what's this? I picked up the plastic tray I was using to hold the varnish and look: Thinned with condenser water (as usual) some time ago. Is it the varnish or was there something in the tray, which I hadn't washed? Hmmm. I'll do another coat using a clean tray and see what happens. 3
keefr22
Looks like the effect you get when you use too much of Tamiya's flat base when mixing your own matt clear, perhaps you hadn't mixed it quite thoroughly enough as the matting agent might have settled out over time? You said earlier you didn't use clear before decals because you were a 'lazy' modeller - I don't think that's the case at all Ced, you're an impatient modeller, want to get things done quickly and onto the next little gem - it is a drag waiting for things like coats of Klear or the like to dry before you can crack on!! LIzzie is looking really good now, have you decided what said next little gem is going to be yet? (don't go telling me I've missed the first 4 pages of the build.....!! ) Keith 3 1
CedB
Thanks Keith, kind of you... impatient is probably right and this is no exception; couldn't wait to get it off the bench! So I'm calling this finished and I'm not inclined to post an RFI as I'm not that happy with it so here are some final shots: As you can see (I hope) the DullCote sorted out the shiny problem and then second coat of matt varnish has left her with a sort of 'dusty' finish, which I quite like, so there. She's now been stuck in the 'cabinet' with the other over-sized 1/48 model (sorry for the blur, it's a bit dark in there): Right, back to my usual scale but not my theme... another Phil donation and chosen for its (hopefully) ease of build: Thanks as usual for all your help, support and companionship during this build. See you at the Phantom!
Heather Kay
I think I’d be happy with that, Ced. It looks like a working aircraft, with some wear and tear. It may not be perfect, but thats is usually in the eye of the beholder. 1
perdu
Like very good, 'specially as it's in that awkward big ungainly scale

amblypygid
Looks like a lovely Lizzie to me. Sadly, I didn't see one fly yesterday at Duxford;; not sure whether that was because of the rain or it just happened when we were trying to warm the children up in one of the hangars.
Biggles87
Luvverly. That's a really flat finish, you really did get the mix right this time, it looks as good as W&N Galleria flat varnish. I suppose I'd better go and look at the trenchy Phantom now. John
Gorby
Damn fine model Ced, one that I'd be happy with. As always it was a very entertaining and informative build as well.

TheBaron
Your jib. I have been admiring the cut of it. Those last few pages remind us what an *apparently* simple proposition the Lizzie really is Ced - until (as hendie says) you look closely at how all those bits intersect in space. Liking what you have done here.
Spookytooth
Looks good Ced, at the larger scale things have a tendancy to look worse than it is. Varnishes can be funny things at times. Well done sir fine build, like the P.E. stuff, Simon.
stevehnz
That looks beaut Ced, it so deserves an RFI. As for decals, you may have seen it already but if not, treat yourself to a read through this, it just works, wonderfully well. Steve. bigbadbadge
Looks good to me Ced. You have created a fine replica of the lovely Lizzie fella. Great work. All the best Chris
CedB
Thanks Heather, Simon (both), Hendie, Chris, John, Gorby, Keith, Roger, Dennis, Tony and Chris Bill I'm back to 'normal scale' now so looking forward to more perdu comments! Steve thanks for the link to the Klear puddle technique - looks like a good compromise for me so I'll be giving that a try very soon
Kitsticker
Dear Ced, if you are unhappy with that, I can't imagine what you were hoping for.... Looks mighty fine to me and brings back memories of the 1/72 Matchbox ones I made oh so many years ago... (but not as nice as this....) Here's to the next build! Cheers Geoff
giemme
You sorted the decals issue for good, and she now looks the part If anything, just a little buffing of the final flat coat would slightly improve the overall look, but she certainly shows off in your cabinet Ciao
