I did learn from our tour guide (an amazing guy, just like the Greeks you see in WWII movies) a limerick that will interest you cat lovers:

Going to be a lazy day here today after the end to the week, plus it's sunny enough to consider the madness of a May barbecue later. There's also that Storyville documentary about the 'B' subject I want to watch and perhaps a squint at the new Das (re?)Boot too (What did you guys make of it - any good?)

 

I did do some taking-of-stock however and tidying up a few loose ends on the turret earlier. At some stage this weekend I need to sit down and put together a proper snag list of any oustanding details that need attention prior to primer, but for today anyway, here's how the land lies.

 

Turret finished:

It isn't glued onto that mounting ring yet as I there will undoubtedly be some finessing needed to get both ring and dome aligned with the combined fuselage and interior framework at closing-up time. 

At least everything seems to have stayed within the bounds of comparative scale:

As to the match between turret ring and said framework:

You can probably see in this OH shot that I've a bit of work to do on the framework ring that the turret azimuth ring sits on (if you get my drift?) so that the two are reconciled spatially in terms of how high the turret sticks up: 

It's not a major issue regarding the optics as that interface between the two will be well  buried inside the fuselage, but I'm frankly surprised that the mismatch is so small given the extended period of time involved in working on the various sub-assemblies. (Ain't bragging about consciously-controlled skill here btw, there is a huge dollop of luck and sub-conscious instinct in it turning-out so.)

You can see that I succumbed to temporarily tacking the Vickers on to the elevation arm:

It won't be there in the final pre-flight posture, but I couldn't resist a gander at this stage:

All very well of course but however good that might look internally won't matter a jot if the final external profile doesn't match up to reality:

That dome maybe needs to be lower in the fuselage by about a mill. or so but otherwise appearances here better match the 'gathered-in-at-the-waist' impression that the A.W. turret has sitting into tthe top of the fuselage with that higher forward shoulder.

She'll sit like this for a bit now as I work out what to sort next in the run-up to primering...

Kute kittens aside - I’m sitting next to our floofball at the moment, so I have to be careful in case he gets jealous - if my Oxford turret even begins to approach anything close to that result I will be a very happy camper indeed. At the very least, with a helping heave from your waffle dalek, it can’t be worse than the kit offering!

Proved yesterday that Facebook is actually useful for something as we managed to find the owner of a lost cat that had taken up residence in our back garden over the last few days, so that was a result!

 

I enjoyed the new Das Boot, even if it's a bit more 'Hollywood' than the grittier original. Particularly like the opening scene of the first episode!

The thickness of most kit mouldings for turrets frequently strikes a false note for me Heather - the optical distortion/refraction and  those angles where you see the bulky cross section through one of the edges such where the guns poke out. One of those instances where a good quality vacform wins hands down for me.

 

As regards the Waffle Darlicke there's a lot more experimenting I want to do with various grades of materials abovbe and beyond the 0.5mm PETG I've tried so far. At this stage I'm certainly on the crude end of the spectrum in terms of skill and understanding in this regard.

Today went by in a weirdly disjointed blur of activities but in and amongst, some more bits knocked off the snag list.

 

It has to be said that matters didn't start too well: a colossal waste of 2 hours trying to get the etch windshield framing to adhere:

Cosmetically it looked so nice that it had seduced me into abandoning the original plan to mask the windshield but no matter how I tried, it the thin metal geometry would not conform to the compound shapes of the transparency.

Lesson learned.

A few hours break and compusure recovered by carrying on from the turret by also foiling-up a frame for the windshield myself:

It's not fixed into place yet obvs - amongst other things I need to build the couple of magneto swtiches that on the Mk.1 are mounted up inside the windshield, round about where the central upright frame at the front meets the leading edge of the roof framing:

Given the thin walls of the crew seats, I also soldered some scrap inside the bases to give a more generous surface area to epoxy them into place later:

Last thing I want is any of those fellows loose around the caboose later.

In similar troubleshooting mode, some 0.4mm tubing was also soldered to the oil coolers to enable a more secure mounting to the nacelles:

Rapidly running-out of displacement jobs now and am confronted by the imminence of painting the interior something green and cockpitty. (Note to self: finish building the rear fuselage door and glue side glazing along the cockpit in readiness for - yes @giemme you heard right - primer!)

 

Busy first half looms but hopefully a bottle of Alclad black will get shaken in the latter stages of the week.
