1/48th Luftwaffe F-86K JG 74 Neuburg AB 1964 - completed

Recommended Posts

I’m getting in nice and early with this one.....or should I say 3 builds!

Rather than the usual large complex build I’ve gone for 3 smaller and hopefully simpler builds with models coming from the stash....and me being me this year, resin is involved with 2 of the builds being resin.

Ok first up a NA F-86K Sabre Dog!

The model is another Collect-Aire resin beast from my stash which has parts to cover covers all three (3) versions of the F-86 Sabre Dog. I’ll be doing the Luftwaffe one, these were actually manufactured under license by Fiat and were in-service from 1959 to 1965.

The model is very typical Collect-Aire, not super clean modelling but for a change not warped in any place. Two fuselages are supplied for the different variants, one with 20mm cannons for F-84K and the other with rocket pack for D & L models. (plus the K model was slightly longer).

IMG_1351-L.jpg

The wing is solid in one section, which I prefer and for the D model you need to chop the wing tips off, they had shorter wings.

IMG_1352-L.jpg

There’s quite a bit of flash on the rest of the parts and some giant air bubbles on a few parts so I see a wee bit of scratchbuilding will be required.

IMG_1354-L.jpg

Some of the cockpit detail is quite poor so I will use Eduards F-86D Interior PE set for sort that out, plus a wee bit of custom work.....I may end up re-building the whole cockpit floor yet!

IMG_1703-L.jpg

The wheels are also a touch on the poor side as well.....well more like resin blobs! So I’ll be using Eduards resin F-86F ones to replace those. They are very close to what they should be so I can get away with using them.

IMG_1655-M.jpg

The colour scheme will be a Luftwaffe F-86K, the kit does have a colour scheme and decals for one of these, however the decals are a bit old and out of register.

IMG_1355-M.jpg

So with some help from Arniec I managed to find a set produced by HaHen. These are beautiful and cover all he aircraft that were in Luftwaffe service.

I’m actually quite excited about the GB and baring any unforseen issues this will be a very straight forward build......... hopefully!

Love the F-86D/K (came close to buying the 1/32 Kitty Hawk kit the other day) so really looking forward to this. If it's half as good as your Vigilante it'll be superb.

It does look a nice model, you could always buy it and join in? :D

Decided on a Special Hobby 1/32 T-33 instead, which I'll build another time (hopefully the Lockheed GB will get up for next year). Anyway, decided to join in this one with the Tanmodel RF-84F that I've been wanting to get to for a while now.

I see your carrying on with your resin streak, the luftwaffe will be well represented in this one I'm sure. Bmf or camo?

Another cool choice Rich but you certainly don't take the easy route to creating your masterpieces :)

Yea Col's here  woohooo!!!  :yahoo:    :penguin: :elephant: :cow6:

see how often do you get greeted like that!  :D

Gosh i've given up on easy builds, no matter what I plan they end up being more involved than I expected. Hopefully this one will be a breeze......thou the cockpit has me worried a bit!

Sounds as if you've got the party started in fine style there without me Rich

I think I know now where all the resin kits in the world has gone. 😉

They must be all in your possesion Rich. You must have a big resin stash.

good luck with this build. I have got the Special hobby one. But I won't build that.

If I build mine I will probably build a Norwegian one. As I have already build two in Dutch markings.

These were converted F-86D from Revell, because at that time there weren't conversionsets.

As you know I will build a Russian Scud launcher for this GB. I still need to put up my build.

Cheers,

thanks Arnold, to be honest it's only just scratching the resin stash! 2018 is definitely the year of resin.  I'm currently chasing a resin 1/32nd Typhoon, just hoping the price don't go too crazy, I can always buy it direct if it does.

I had thought of building one of these, this version I think became frontline operational in 1969.

SA-4 Ganef

But I think I have enough on my plate as it is........ but I can see one in my stash quite soon. :D

Those SA-4 certainly look as if they'd have spoiled your day if it landed in the garden! The Russians seem to do f-off big missiles in fine style.

you're not wrong, their lethal rage is probably the sie of a small country!

Plus now I the owner of one of these.....I couldn't help myself on evilBay last night (now I have to hide it from SWMBO somewhere!). :D   And I'm not going to build it for this GB.........maybe?

I hadn’t quite planned to actually start this one yet but I decided to have a break from the EBR and start to look over and clean up this one.

After spending the day on her I can see it’s not quite going to be the nice simple build I hoped for.....but being resin what did I expect.

Ok first some basic stuff, the wheels.......well it’s pretty obvious why I replaced them, that wee creamy disk shaped thing is meant to be a brake hub! I get a choice of nose wheel types, both types were used on Luftwaffe F-86K’s.

IMG_1740-L.jpg

The white metal legs are pretty poor as well so they’ll be replaced by some new ones form SAC.

The ejector seat is complete rubbish! It’s a mixture of white metal and resin...for reasons unknown. The seat is miss-cast around the head rest, the back guide rail is the wrong way around and completely wrong. The resin frame of the seat is way too thick and completely unworkable!

IMG_1741-L.jpg

It’s meant to look like this.

F-86K%20ejection%20seat-L.jpg

I’m going to have to rebuild the lot from scratch! To help with this I’ve managed to buy just the resin seat (nobody does a resin replacement in this scale), I’ll construct the frame from rod around the seat, this won’t be an easy task at all!

The cockpit tub is not the best nor the moulded side panels, hopefully some detailing and paint will help. The IP shape was wrong but the new PE one should help me get the shape right.

IMG_1743-M.jpg

The intake and radar mount are all one piece and the intake had issues, I filled it all down and given it a good coat of filler, hopefully it’ll clean up ok. I’m half tempted to fit intake/exhaust covers. There’s no back to the intake, the exhaust is wrong and the nose wheel bay won’t fit with the intake in place!

IMG_1742-M.jpg

Speaking of the nose wheel well.......it’s wrong as well..no surprises here!

For some reason the opening for the nose wheel was not symmetrical on Sabre Dogs, though these guys thought it was! So I had to fill a couple of places with plastic strips and cut out other areas.

IMG_1745-M.jpg

The extra bit of strip on the nose join isn’t my fault this time, the fuselage was per-sanded when I got it and the nose was slightly out. The opening is a bit rough at the moment but I’ll add some thin card later to clean it up.

And of course the wheel well was the wrong shape as well, it was easier to build a new one rather than cutup and add bits to the old one. I now just need to shape it to fit, it’s a lot stronger that the original, plus I’ll add extra detail to it later as well. I had to “adjust” the door itself.

IMG_1746-M.jpg

I cleaned up some other stuff as well, while thinning down the airbrakes I found billions of bubble just below the surface! I’ll need to be very careful how I sand things on this build.

IMG_1747-M.jpg

Well hopefully in a couple of weeks she’ll be like this, ready to be painted.

IMG_1748-M.jpg

The two areas that require the most work will be the nose gear/intake and cockpit. The cockpit is straight forward just tidy and build/paint, the ejection seat can go in late in the build. The nose gear/intake, I’m really leaning towards just cleaning up the opening and fitting an intake cover. It’ll save some serious work and still look pretty good.

So all in all this’ll be another normal resin build for me.......when will I learn.

  • 2 weeks later...

this is just a quick update with some super serious PORN attached at the end!!!! :yikes::jump_fire:

Model wise all I've done so far is undercoat the cockpit tub and try and figure out how to rebuild the ejector seat. To that end the replacement seat has arrived but unfortunately no structure for it to mount to! Plus the replacement U/c has arrived as well, so I guess I'd better start on this one!

IMG_1800-L.jpg

Oh what's Mr Happy with the hat and beard doing here? Probably spying on these Capitalist Dogs!

Ok Porn time!!! 😱  Please do not go any further if you're easily............

This arrived today in a big box wrapped in plain brown paper, oh dear...........

I had to have a wee lay down (and a cold shower) after I opened it!!!

IMG_1802-L.jpg

It's 1/32nd Hawker Typhoon Mk.1b and on a resin porn scale of 1 - 10, it's a 13! MDC provides a whole series of resin update kits for other Typhoons, so they decided they may as well supply the rest of it as a resin complete model. It's easily as nice as anything from the Resin God's, Fisher Model & Pattern! I could look at her all day.

Now I just need a GB to build her in.... plus the other 2 MDC Ki-61 Hein's I have!

Now if you'll please excuse me I need some "private time" with my new love of my life!

You were just to late for the Hawker GB that ended in June. Well you can maybee build it if next year the D-Day GB goes thrue.;)

I would have robbed a cheap Revell/Monogram F-86D of it's private parts for this build.B)

Nah, he can place it in the possible D-day GB or the Battle of the Bulge one. 😎
