Pegasus Nautilus 1/144

Recommended Posts

It's been a long time since I've built any maritime subjects (lately I've been doing aircraft, instead), but I felt like a change-of-pace so here's my latest project... Pegasus's 1/144 Nautilus from Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea:

WIP can be found here: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235039696-pegasus-nautilus-1144/

On to the pics!

First off, some photos of the interior detailing (since they'll never be seen again unless I drop and break the thing):

And, the finished build on it's custom base:

I think we're going to be late for happy hour...

This was a fun build, even with the various problems I encountered along the way! Maybe some day I'll get the inclination to finish this project, that's been on my shelf of doom for about 5-years:

My superlatives and accolades vocabulary is run dry on describing your work! The diorama design truly gives it a far less than

a static ambiance. Outstanding!

It really is a great turn out. By pure coincidence, my wife just bought me this kit as a treat, so I shall use your thread as inspiration!

If I were to do it again, I would try to find a way to get better visibility into the salon. A couple of options:

1) modify the kit's windows to make them removable (should be feasible to make them able to slide out of the hull opening)

2) replace the kit windows with flat panels of thin clear plastic. One could use tape or decal striping to add window framing, if desired (I would opt for a hexagonal grid)

Also, the PE wire at the top of the ram is slightly too long. It should be easy to extend the slot in the hull (near the forward hatch) so the wire can be made taut when installed.

p.s. If you need a squid eye, I have a few spares. Easy to install (just grind out the original eye to male a receptacle for the glass one). It makes a great difference.

looks brilliant - I have been bought this for Christmas (counting down the months till I get it) so it is great to see yours built up and with so much extra detail added - I missed your WIP so I'm off to have a good look over how it all came togther

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. My only disappointment is that my work detailing the salon cannot be seen.

But I’m hopeful that my Nautilus will do well in the local model show later this month!

  • 3 weeks later...

I watched the movie for the first time in 30+ years ago at the weekend and had to come back for another look at this great little diorama - enjoyed it just as much the second time of checking in on your model.

Just got back from the local IPMS chapter's annual show & contest, and I'm mighty pleased to have come in first place in the "Diorama" category. There were more than 500 models entered in the show, the judges told me later that my Nautilus very nearly made "best in show" but was squeaked out by a very nicely done USS Constitution (Revell 1/96).
