bianfuxia
Hello everyone, I'd like to join in with my Airfix Comet 4B in Olympic Airways of Greece markings. This fits the bill, right? I got started tonight already. the weights are the nuts that come with bicycle brake pads. You get a new set of nuts every time you replace them so I have lots. This bit is kind of cute. ^ That's where I got up to after an hour or so. The fit is actually pretty decent for a kit this old and I am glad there are no windows to fill and sand. Looking forward to checking out some of the other builds in this GB. Edited July 19, 2018 by bianfuxia
Giorgio N
Welcome to the GB ! Yes, this fits the bill perfectly ! Good to see another classic British airliner built here. I see that you've already made very good progress in little time, looking forward to the rest of this build
bianfuxia
Got the plane gap-filled now and the first round of rough sanding is done. I think I've decided to just go for a smooth finish, not worrying about the raised panel lines or trying to scribe new ones. Pleasantly surprised about how well this ancient kit went together. Much better than I'd expected.
JWM
In topic it is said "1/72" but I think it is rather "1/144" scale. I recognize the clasic Airfix kit. Am I right? Cheers J-W

Giorgio N
I'd say your choice of going with a smooth finish makes perfect sense. Looking forward to the rest of the build
bianfuxia
My builds have all ground to a halt. Just back from summer vacay which was cool but now I am swamped at work and have a week long business trip coming up from Sunday. I'm going to take this and some other builds needing sanding and do that in the wee hours and then hopefully get back into it when I'm home. Sorry I know it kind of sucks when someone updates a post with no progress but anyway...haha sorry. I'm enjoying others' work though! 2
Ventora3300
One thing that may save a bit of time is glueing in the large outer undercarriage doors before painting - these doors are 'up' whether the undercarriage is up or down (only open to let the wheels out). I made a beautiful job of painting these inside and out on the sprue on my current build then had to sand off the edges to get them to fit in the holes in the lower wing, then more filling to neaten up the joints. Much neater if you put them in before painting. If you leave them 'down' when the undercarriage is down, you hide all your work on those tiny wheels and undercarriage legs. Best of luck! Cheers. Mike (I was just about to add 'some of my best work has been done in the back seat of my car' in relation to fitting in some kit building for BM GB's but I'm sure that would be misinterpreted by some of the more jocular members of the BM community!) 1

They happen to me quite often for your same reasons. Looking forward to any update you'll be able to post in the future, the GB still runs for a while, you'll sure find time for the Comet
bianfuxia
Finally moving again on the Comet. Over the weekend I taped it up, leaving the area that will be white for last. I always find that the tape leaves a residue on gloss white that it doesn't on other colours. So here it is in the base coat of Tamiya mica silver. I will then do a few different shades on selected panels, even if that isn't 100 per cent correct. It will just look a bit better that way, given the fuselage has no panel lines. For example I will do the elevators and flaps etc in another shade of silver and maybe a few other panels here or there. I forgot to put in the wheel doors in line with the tip from Ventora3300 but I will at least remember to instal them in the closed position!
bianfuxia
I have noticed the problem under the tail and decided not to bother with it. It's nice to keep a few notes of "vintage" I think.
bianfuxia
Next round just sprayed - the control surfaces, just for a bit of visual variety.
bianfuxia
Sadly I think I might need to do a little more work on the top of the fuselage. I was really hoping it would disappear under a coat of paint but this is already three coats of Tamiya spray.
Giorgio N
Are you using spray cans ? If so the tamiya white really needs a few coats to cover well. In any case good to see that your model is progressing fast, almost there
bianfuxia
well, I guess it's decal time. Four, or was it five, coats of Tamiya XF-26 gloss white spray and, believe it or not, two tones of silver, and I think painting is finished. Except the tail fin, of course, but I will brush paint that with some nice blue I already have. It's kind of a shame that the demarcation line will have a decal over it because it is one of the better ones I have done. Similarly a shame that the four or five coats didn't fully hide the mess I made of the top seam, but as they say, hey, good enough for government work! You can hardly see the difference in the silver tones but basically the leading edges of the wings, and the control surfaces on wings and tailplanes, are in a different shade. This one, I hope, will get finished by the end of the GB!

bianfuxia
I was all set to bring this thing on my vacation but when packing I discovered I have misplaced the windscreen. I think we get back the day this thing closes so while I will still finish up my Comet, I don't think it will sneak into the gallery unless as sometimes seems to happen we are granted a little more time. Everything else is done, I even pre-painted the u/c. So it's just the decals and find that damned windscreen!
bianfuxia
*goes to see when GB ends* OK so I will make it easily assuming I can find that part. I thought this ended 8/10. Woo!

And actually the new end date is now October 21st, as modellers were confused by the header saying 17/10.. all group builds end on Sunday and Oct. 21st is the closest Sunday
bianfuxia
Still no sign of the windscreen part for this. Apart from attaching the wheels there is not much more I can do until I find that, because the blue fuselage stripe kind of depends on the windscreen being in place. Still, to keep it moving, I did some decals just now and also painted the tail a nice Tamiya royal blue. Unlike the fuselage and wings which I did with spray cans, the tail is brush painted. It looks black in the pics but it is actually a nice shade of dark blue. The decals are fantastic, quite unlike most of my lifetime experience with Airfix decals...
Giorgio N
Glad to see this progressing, hope you can find the windscreen in time ! Airfix decals today are very good, very different from what they used to be in the past... if you have a recent box, you'll have some great decals
