RAAF Spitfire Mk VIII - ICM 1:48 scale

Recommended Posts

Ever have one of those kits you regret starting? I picked up the ICM 1:48 Spitfire Mk VIII going cheap. Sink marks, very poorly fitting parts and a lot of flash. I had to use a humongous load of filler. But I finally managed to beat it into some sort of submission. Brush painted with my interpretation of fresh foliage green camouflage using Tamiya acrylics, underside is Italeri acrylic. A slight weathering with diluted oils and finished with a Matt Tamiya clear from a rattle can. Markings are for A58-504 flown by F/O Rex Watson, 452 Squadron RAAF, Balikpapan, Borneo, August 1945 from the Eduard Aussie 8 package. Thanks for looking.

She looks very smart in the solid green. A nice build. The ICM kit certainly is a little more challenging than other 1/48 spitfires, but I think the detail is nice and as you've shown it certainly builds into a fine model. The fact you can sometimes buy 2 ICM spitfires for the price of 1 Airfix, Eduard etc. can't be understated!

Turned out very nice. The early ICM kits certainly had some issues. My Mk.VIII was short shot on the right fuselage half. A quick note to ICM and in no time I was sent not only the fuselage but the entire tree it was attached to. Quality service by ICM

Thanks. Challenging - that’s one word for it! Does depend on what sort of mood you are in though, I guess.

:yikes: ... WOW I really like the Spitfire ! What green did you use for this if i may ask ?

Thanks. Ummm, not sure I can. It was a mix of various Tamiya acrylics - a bit of this and a bit of that. I think the base was XF 26 Deep green with some XF 70 Dark green 2.

Good service indeed. I have an ICM C-45 In the stash, i assume that’s a later kit so hopefully won’t be as challenging.

Don't know if it's accurate or not but the green certainly looks good. Think I'm going to have to look into foliage green at some point for one of my future builds.

I rather like foliage green, here are two other examples:
