F-105D drag chute compartment color

Recommended Posts

Hello forum--this is my first post on Britmodeller after reviewing the works posted here in awe!  Had a question that regarding the the color of the F-105 brake Chute compartment--reviewing pictures on the internet I believe it & the interior of the drag chute door would be interior green--but figured I would ask the forum for thoughts given the awesome pool of talent.  Thank you for the opportunity to participate and I apologize if this question has already been answered on another thread.  Looking fwd to posting pics of my build!

Hi Erwin,

Welcome!

I think you're right that the interior of the compartment would be Interior Green. That would be consistent with the color of most of the other interior compartments, such as the refueling probe well and some of the avionics bays. The only good photo I found of the drag chute bay was a museum jet and they had carried the camouflage paint into the drag chute bay.

I found several color photos where the interior of the door is dark, which could mean natural metal hidden by shadow or shadow plus green paint, and one color photo where the door is a light color. It could be dirty white or silver paint/natural metal. They did paint the gear wells white on some Thuds later in life, so it would make sense that the interior of the drag chute door might have been painted white, too. I think you could probably get away with green, white, or natural metal for the door interior, but white only for a later jet.

Cheers!

Ben

Erwin,

From what I have seen in photos and read in text, most likely the interior of the drag chute bay and door was painted in interior green, most likely FS34151, but as  Ben stated, due to maintenance/overhauls/repaints, they could be white, natural l metal, or the undersurface grey, like the wheel bays. I have attached a link which doesn't help you with your original question, but might be useful for your modeling project. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  I bet the just released MMP monograph on the F-105 might be a good reference. I have one on order and if I find some definitive information, I will add it to this post.

I found two b&w photos of F-105D's with the drag chute compartment door open- both aircraft are in nmf and the interior of the door looks dark, so probably interior green. The photos are in the old Squadron/Signal Modern Military Aircraft series, Thud. One is F-105D-6 s/n 59-1770 and the other is a D-15, s/n 61-055 Best I can do at the moment...I am just guessing that interior green would be most likely until late production or after upgrades, overhaul, repaint, etc. @Corsairfoxfouruncle

Ben, Mike & Corsair—1st thank u for the wonderful & informative input—will post pics of the build as I move fwd—working on both a 1/72 Trumpeter F-105D & the old 1/72 Revell F-105D together—leveraging the Eduard interior & exterior for the Trumpeter—will post some of my more recent builds, 1/72 Airfix Hurricane, Spitfire & BF-109E—on a Cold War jet kick right now & just completed the Meng F-102 & Italeri B-57–back to the F-105–just completed the initial foil of the Revell afterburner petals—hope that wasn’t too much info—will probably go interior green for the drag chute compartment—again, thank you all for input—Erwin

I can't answer for the F-105, but certainly on Phantoms, any period of service with the rough chute container being jerked out on landing, then kicked back into place on reloading leaves the bay interior sleeve looking more natural dull aluminium than painted after a while

A little off-topic, but I was looking for color photos of the drag chute compartment/door on Thuds, and I found these. Magnificent airplane at the zenith of its combat career! One quick mutha down low, and from what I have heard and read about the Thud, it was rock steady at speed down in the weeds! The last link is pretty funny, at least it should be for @Reparty as it shows a ground crewman jumping up and down on the drag chute compartment door to get it to close! (Looks like the interior of the door is interior green, but I could be wrong!) Thuds uber alles!

Mike, Awesome & thank you for the info!  Will get some WIP photos uploaded when I return home—I am really thankful for the info—will be doing mine in  interior green  w/ the door interior in NMF leveraging the dull Eduard photo etch—your info coupled w/ Haydn’s FB & Corsair’s photo were convincing—have to say everyone’s post played a part—looking fwd to posting the foil afterburner petals (will be a WIP—plan on Alclad for jet exhaust & the like). Also need to get smarter on the switchology to post pics—will get there!
