New 1/72nd scale Airfix Wellington x 2, compared with an MPM kit! Two finished so far!

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

                Well the new 1/72nd scale Airfix Wellington was delivered by the postie this afternoon and I started to get on with it straight away,...... here is the painted interior by tea time;

I have to say that I am very impressed indeed,..... the turret detail is the best I`ve seen in a 1/72nd scale British bomber so far, the fabric and geodetic surface detail is sublime and the interior has everything you need,....... just need to decide on a colour scheme now and DK Decals have just released three sheets to choose from!

Cheers

Nearly finished I see Tony!

Did you let the postman get back into his van first???

Watching this with great interest as I've a feeling that this is going to be good.

Was the fuselage floor/bomb bay roof really open to the elements when the bomb doors were open? The only reference photos I have showing that area are from Wellington Mk 1c used for paratrooping and the area in question is covered in matting for the paras to sit on.

Cheers lad`s,.... no pressure then! I`ve got quite a few builds on the go at the moment in various GB`s,..... but I just had to start this straight away,... it is that good!

Looks like a real game-changing kit.

Out of interest, was the geodetic frame really left aluminium in the otherwise black flightdeck/nose? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of painting it black?

Will

Re the geodetics in the cockpit area,... I really don`t know mate,....... I`ve tried to subdue them slightly in this area to make them look like weathered painted metal,......  but I doubt that it will make much difference once the model is finished.

Cheers

I was under the impression that the area was plywood covered,...... I`m currently researching it,...... give me time,....I only got the kit this afternoon!!😉

I`m just uploading some pics to Flickr which should answer some questions,..... I was just eating my Spaghetti Bolognese!!

Here are some pics that I have saved on my hard drive over the years which may answer some questions,..... remember that the RAF Museum aircraft is a late war build converted into a post war T.10. My thanks to the original photographers;

As you can see the bomb bay area was `plated' over with wood,.... but this was a post war trainer.

Here are some period pics,..;

On the kit the outer bomb bay doors ar moulded open with visible hinges and a gap between them and the fuselage,..... but looking at this desert based Mk.II I may cut them off and re attached them without the gap;

And last of all,..... I wish that somebody would raise this Wimpey found in the Med/Aegean! It looks to be a Mk.Ic converted for torpedo bomber duties with the turret replaced by a wooden structure which has rotted away? ;

Well what colour scheme should I choose? I want something a little `different' and DK Decals have just released three sheets which cater for just this eventuality;

Now I intend on building a few of these new kits,..... and want to build one with the `solid' nose,........ but this one will probably have a nose turret!

 The ASR Flight Wimpey`s used over the Med have always interested me,.... whoever painted this one couldn`t reach the top of th fin to overpaint the previous bomber black;

And some appear to have had a three colour upper surface scheme!;

I quite like the `coastal' Wimpey`s used in the Med like these too, especially the torpedo bombers of 38 Sqn (1st photo)  and the 459 Sqn RAAF aircraft called `Little Joe' fitted with a 20mm cannon in the nose, coded F and seen in the 3rd photo ;

The Coastal Command Wimpeys are interesting too;

Here are a few colour pics to use as reference too;

Notice the freshly doped fabric on the right wing of the Wimpey in the above pic.

Hot off the press eh Tony, looks like you're going to need a few of these with all those decal choices. Its good to see DK including some 75 sqn ones in there, happily I can pass on the DK offerings as I believe one of the kit choices is for  the machine Jimmy Ward won his VC on. That's the only one I'll be needing.

Steve.

I can see myself wanting a few of these myself. I’d go at least one Mk.1A/C but the icing on the cake would be a clear nose and tail early Mk.1. This has always been my favourite Wimpy version so hope that a quickfire conversation gets released shortly.

As I’ve already purchased season tickets to the T’OT model fest, my seat has already been reserved. I’m just waiting for a fresh batch of pop corn to arrive and illl join you lot a little later. I’m fully aware that at Tony’s build rate I’d best not wait too long or the show will be all but finished.

Cheers and looking forward to the upcoming Wimpy educational.. Dave

Though not really my scale, I had a very close look at this at Telford last year - it looks a superb kit.  My Dad (an RN Observer - Swordfish & Barracuda) had a Wimpey in his logbook (I assume an ASV radar trainer), so I might yet be tempted one day.

So you definitely have my attention!

Cheers Fella`s,..... thanks for your support. Adrian, I remember your model well mate,.... it was a real corker!

Right,.... last night I got most of the interior put together,.... here are some pics;

DSCF4612_NEWDSCF4613_NEWDSCF4611_NEWDSCF4610_NEWDSCF4609_NEW

The fuselage will be closed today and then I shall concentrate on the wings,

Cheers

           Tony

Edit,.... if you look closely you can see flashed over holes for ASV antennae in the rear fuselage! So a Mk.VIII looks to be on the cards? There also appear to be lines to score along to remove the nose and rear turret areas,.... again, other options like 4 gun rear turret and solid nose? We`ll see whether the engine nacelles will allow different engine options too,..... shouldn`t be too hard.

Tony,

Brilliant as ever. Should be getting mine from Hannants in a few days. Very much looking

forward to seeing it. But your build and pics will suffice until then.

Well done!

All the Best!

Don

Looking nice Tony.  I like the pic of the Wellington over the sea in company with the sole RAF  Fairchild 91. First time seen a picture of the Fairchild in the air.

I'll pop back later tonight and look at the finished product🤭😉

Hi Tony.

Do you know who found out the third color on the 9. DK72069 set (Wellington Mk.IC, T2829 - 9th option) was Mid Stone ?

And what does speak for that very interesting color combination ?

Cheers,

Martin

Great stuff Tony, I have both the Matchbox and a 70's Airfix boxing of this, I will follow with great interest and try desperately to avoid adding to the stash
