Corsair F4U-4 Revell 1/72

Recommended Posts

It's my first topic here, so let me introduce myself shortly:
I'm a polish scale modeler. I've built models since I was a teenager and a member of a local modeling club. When I was 18/19 years old, I had to take a break due to lack of time. Almost 10 years later, my fiance gave me a birthday gift (airplane model - Lublin r.XIII ter), to recall myself how it was to be a modeler again :) It should’ve been one-time adventure, but obviously it was exactly the opposite.
This Corsair is the third completed one from then. Previous two models were rather training ones, I had to recall myself all the techniques and honestly, I didn’t have a nice workbench tools or paints, besides little box with pile set, scalpel, and 3-4 paints. Now, my workbench has grown, I have lots of useful tools. I chose brush painting technique, to have more fun while working. I am aware of better quality performed by using airbrush, but to be honest, I am a brush fan and I won’t give it up for sure. My goal is to achieve such high painting quality as an airbrush.

Before starting to build Corsair, I thought of showing my work at some small modeling exhibitions and share on the internet forums.

I didn’t use any additional, bought parts or even canopy masks. I made them all by myself, for example: masks are made of masking tape. I am satisfied with the painting - layers are really thin, they didn’t hide panel lines. My brush didn’t leave streaks, because I used flat brush and paint thinner. However, I am not happy about paint chips and scratches. I chose wrong technique and even though I tried to fix this, but my efforts were pointless, because it looked worse. I need to focus on that.
The orange strip on the fuselage is painted, not used from decals. I focused on engine, some photos are attached below.

You are welcome to check out my work in progress gallery on my blog. It’s in polish (english version in progress), but you can see a lot of photos there:

Wow, she's a beauty!

Very welcome to our circle! You'll find a lot of like-minded people here and when it comes to brush painting, I can se that I (for one) has a lot to learn.

Really nice Corsair.

Kind regards,

Joachim

Wow.  A terrific build.  Welcome back to the hobby although, looking at the quality of your Corsair, it doesn't look like you have been away!  The whole thing looks great but I particularly like the work you've done on the engine.  There's some really nice detail there.  I have had reservations about this kit because of the odd wing-tip arrangement that Revell went for.  It looked like it might be difficult to blend in but you've shown it can be done so I might have to get one now.

Very nice model. I have just started the new FAA issue as a break from some challenging resin stuff. I must admit that it seems to have a bit of flash for a new kit as if the moulds were wearing Fit could be better in places as well, obviously the parts break down for the different version does not help.

Thank you all for such kind comments!

@Meatbox8 - this kit is really good. Maybe it's not thoroughly perfect, but good enough and not causing problems. But be careful when it comes to canopy. It's very fragile. I got my canopy with air bubble in the middle, so I made a complain to the producer. However, I used this faulty one for paint testing but It cracked 3 times. Second one (sent by the producer) was fragile as well. Even though I paid attention not to break it, the canopy cracked a little, but fortunately, it's not very visible.

Thank you for the tips.  I will look out for the canopy.

Excellent work!

The Corsair is quite a favourite plane of mine, for its remarkable looks and reputation.

Always happy to see more Corsairs - especially in my preferred 1/72 scale.

Must get that Tamiya Birdcage kit out from my stash sometime.........

👍:goodjob:

Nice one - what colors did you use for the Navy blue?

Regards,

Michael

Revell lufthansa blue.  It's a bit darker than in the pictures.

One more photo taken with a smartphone camera in natural light.

Very good. I like the last photo in particular.

If you're worried about the chipping here's a suggestion. Avoid paint. I use an artist's silver pencil - or sometimes just an ordinary pencil - and find I can add very subtle scratches which in 1/72 is all you need. Less definitely is more with chipping.

And as for the exhausts try pastels which you can apply dry and again give a very subtle effect. I find it gives me a lot more control, and you can seal the effect with varnish if you want.

Looking forward to your future builds.

Ian
