1/48 Tamiya Razorback - Cpt. Walker Mahurin - March '44 - update 25/09/18 - FINISHED

I thoroughly enjoyed my build of Tamiya's 1/48 Bubbletop P-47 in the last STGB:

26063842031_fd4f171ddc_c.jpg

so I thought I'd try the Razorback for this one. This is going to have to be a quick build as I have plans for other builds in other GBs. In fact this will be the first time for a while that I will have several builds on the go at the same time. I'm still finishing off Tiger 1 '131' in the MTO II GB at the moment.

And this is the one I'm going to make it as:

43103977031_5a87178116_b.jpg

.....partly because there are less complicated decals to apply and partly because I reckon there's probably less of this one built because it doesn't have any nice  nose art.

I will try and get something started on this today and, I have to say, I'm really looking forward to building another of Tamiya's lovely Thunderbolts.

Kind regards,

Stix

Great build there on the last STGB.

For the aircraft you are building,  if you haven't noticed, ignore step 4 in the instructions where it tells you to fit the hexagonal distributors - it should be the same round ones that are fitted to option A ( part C14 ).

Thank you Tbolt and thank you for the advice - I would not have know that.

Looks a nice kit Stix,

It certainly does Ozzy - very similar to the Bubbletop - and that was a really good kit to make.

Hi Giorgio and thank you for following.

I did actually make a start today. First I cut the cockpit parts off the sprues - leaving a bit of sprue on each - so I have something to hold while painting:

29242865908_6572fe6960_b.jpg

I added a few extra bits of wiring to the cockpit sides to busy them up a bit more. I used some lead wire and I also drilled some holes in the back of the IP so I can add some of the wires that were quite visible on the actual aircraft. I will add these after the decal is applied.

41303790130_b8f86e799f_b.jpg

First couple of coats of paint - thinned Humbrol 117 for the main areas of the cockpit and Anthracite for the IP - applied with a medium flat brush:

41303789690_b05cd21e6c_b.jpg

29242865128_d7bd297dab_b.jpg

Then I gave all the green areas a wash of very thinned Revell's Gunship Grey before a targeted wash of Revell's Anthracite was applied, in and around, all the detail with a fine pointed brush. Once dry I dry-brushed all these areas with a lightened version of 117:

Tomorrow I will try and do some of the detail painting in the cockpit area.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Lovely detail, Stix! The gunmetal wash gives it a very impressive faded effect; not something I'd ever have considered trying!

Hi amblypygid. Sorry that's a typo - I was typing a bit too quickly - Gunmetal should read Gunship Grey. I was rushing a bit too much. I have now edited it in the post above. Thank you.

Great start Stix,

I have been contemplating one of these for awhile as I prefer the trackback to the bubble top. No doubt your build will persuade me to get one now!

The tamiya P_47 kits are the best around. I look forward to your updates.

Cheers Greg 😀

Aha there you are, I heard that you were building a wingy thing. I must look at the GBs more.

You've made a great start on what I remember as being a really nice kit. I built one when it was first issued and stupidly sold a second one when thinning my stash prior to the big move, because I had the Trumpeter 1/32 version.

Cheers

Hi Greg and thank you. I think you are quite right - if this kit is anything like the Bubbletop version it should be great to build.

Hi John. Yep - wingy things do occasionally still feature in my build schedule. It's just I found I also enjoy tracked stuff too! Yeah - shame you sold it - never mind - there's always birthdays and Christmas!

Only one photo from this morning. I first started work on my Tiger 1 build but then swapped to this. Got a fair bit done - I added a few more details and did some detail painting:

29255443478_4ec7362b49_b.jpg

Some areas were dry-brushed with Revell's Aluminium - where there's likely to have been some wear - seat edges, floor, etc. The control link was made from styrene rod - there should be three, I think, but I only risked fitting one to give the impression of what should be there. I also did some dry-brushing with Revell's Light Grey over some of the switches and knobs.

I still need to add a cable which runs along the cockpit floor and paint up the clear styrene gunsight. I'm also going to add the cables to the back of the instrument panel before starting to assemble everything.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Outstanding interiors, especially the side "consolles" and the IP. :worthy:   Did you use decals for the gauges or are they painted? They look terrific!

Hi Patrice and thank you. I did manage to get some more done yesterday afternoon and, hopefully, the photos are below.

Great work on the cockpit.

Thank you very much Tbolt - it's a lovely cockpit to work with from Tamiya. I think it is one of the best in terms of sharpness of detail I have built.

Hi Giorgio and thank you. The IP is a decal. It's not too bad actually but, in my attempt to persuade it (:fight:) to go into the detail on the plastic I managed to split it. I got it back together but one of the dials isn't quite in line now.

On Sunday afternoon I got some more done and figured I had better get some photos of my work before this is all sealed up in the fuselage.

All the parts in the photo above with some more work done on them and some parts glued together:

42230868735_f947f488d8_b.jpg

Cockpit floor with control column glued in place:

42230865905_0b233d2e1e_b.jpg

Both side walls:

29263178308_6a46951fc4_b.jpg

Test fit with the seat:

42416255724_2da788311f_b.jpg

 - the seatbelt is made from the decal - I cut it out but left it on the backing paper. Then I gave it a coat of matt varnish before painting the edges with a similar colour to the printed surface. The shoulder straps were then given a couple of thinned coats of a similar colour matt paint to tone them down a bit. I used a bit of thinned Aluminium on the buckles to give them a hint of shine. They certainly aren't perfect but they should look okay under the canopy.

Next a test fit with the port cockpit wall in place:

43084802262_371be9f71e_b.jpg

Then the starboard:

42416255294_e0e90c7d3b_b.jpg

I then decided I would try and see what it looked like with the IP in place - it is only lodged in place - so it's on a bit of an angle:

43084801692_4185325840_b.jpg

Same on the other side:

42416254714_4787ced93c_b.jpg

Then with the back in place too:

43084801132_b2f778ef42_b.jpg

42230866885_ee850c3c86_b.jpg

You can see the wires I added to the back of the IP - using lead wire of various thicknesses.

43084830102_9431c3e409_b.jpg

43084829472_1a9780d117_b.jpg

I also tried test fitting the cockpit tub on the feselage sides:

43084832212_f1920288b4_b.jpg

42230897875_3a67cd0384_b.jpg

...and then I glued all the parts together and you can see far less!:

42230894155_d0dbfbb86d_b.jpg

Ah well............. I enjoyed making it!

More next week. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

With the instrument decal I use a punch and die set to punch out the instrument and apply them individually, though I have used the whole decal before and just apply it, add setting solution, wait a little then add some more and the next day it's sucked down nicely.

Lovely cockpit Stix, I like what you did with the decal harness.

it's so easy to o get carried away detailing cockpits only to find that it's not all visible when everything is joined. ( ask me how I know? ) Still, as you say, you know it's there.

Cheers

That is absolutely superb Stix, the cockpit looks fantastic with you usual very high standard of painting, detailing and weathering.

I'm meant to be joining in here (and with the same kit too) but I think I have over committed myself GB wise!

I shall enjoy watching yours come together though.

I really like the seatbelt, a great idea and  it works very well.

Yeah the whole decal settled down well with Humbrol Decalfix and a bit of pressure from some kitchen roll.

Thank you very much John. I have to say, I do usually enjoy working on the cockpits on aircraft builds and this Tamiya one is beautifully detailed which makes it an extra joy to make. and paint.

Hi Craig and thank you for your comments. I'm sure you could squeeze another build in here!

I managed to get a fair bit done on this project over the weekend. I decided to add a bit more detail to the wheelwells. This is how they come in the box:

28406960407_accc6ceeaf_b.jpg

And this is how they looked after some drilling and some adding of lead wires:

28406959767_0e26f62425_b.jpg

28406959197_dd1c21579d_b.jpg

Then I started painting some of the areas that require painting before assembly with thinned (with water) Humbrol 81 - Pale Yellow matt - applied with a small flat brush:

43276349011_b126b5d871_b.jpg

42372185695_7d696f9147_b.jpg

Plus some other bits while I was painting with this colour:

43276348571_96934e35c1_b.jpg

Then over all these I applied a wash of very thinned Revell's Gunship Grey, a targeted wash of Revell's Anthracite before dry-brushing it all with a lightened version of Humbrol 81:

41466619990_120d33ab5d_b.jpg

41466619690_abc1296a0f_b.jpg

Then I painted some of the wires and details in the wheelwells:

42372184145_8e59e6ed9a_b.jpg

29406511948_3ee5587814_b.jpg

Before starting to glue parts to the starboard fuselage - the cockpit tub is only resting in place:

42561212424_433ecb30f6_b.jpg

I have done some other bits and pieces but didn't get time to take any photos.

More next weekend!
