Dakota 4 ?

She was in the RAF at the time of the Berlin Airlift and not sold until later.  The use of RAF serials for trooping fights is linked to the legal requirements for military movements.   Money would not permit expansion of the  RAF transport fleet.  There also in much the same period countries that would not allow British military aircraft overflight or landing rights.  So a dual identity had its uses.

Has anybody ever done a 1/144 C-117/Super DC-3?

Not that I know of. But I do have 1/144 scale plans from an AeroModeller mag!

9/ During the 1950's Transair of Croydon came up with main gear half doors to reduce drag. Among other improvements were Higher capacity hydraulic pumps to reduce gear retraction time and improve performance in the event of an engine failure on take off.

The company marketed these improvements as the Dakmaster. The Air Registration Boards designation was Dakota 6

The doors are of a compound curve so tricky to replicate.

...........................................................................

Finally an invitation to the after-market cottage industry suppliers.

Please, could we have Transair style Gear doors in 72 and 48Th Scales and a set of engine cowlings with gills open?

+1 for the doors in 1/72 please

Wow! Great information put on here

A couple of things kind of baffled me, being new to the commercial airline zone and the DC3.

The beacon on top of the fin seems quite randomly assigned.

And the intakes of course... But there's also a gadget fitted to some exhaust systems, pointing forwards and a bit funnel shaped.

Love that Scottish door solution with steps and hand rails.

A bit tricky to scratch build, but it would be rewarding to do!

I've seen a couple of the new Airfix kits well built, and they look very good. And the builders had high praise for the kit

If you do a Transair conversion  you have to do a new set of wheels as well as they have a different steel rim and brakes.

Transair called it the Dakmaster conversion..

I have made a set of wheels of which i am going to try to make extra castings from in resin and i need to do the doors though..

It is a slow project...

Just been reading about a couple of airframes and I'm not sure if you guys have covered them.

The Tri-motor variant... Is that the one with 3P&W turboprops?

Called the Conroy Tri-Turbo 3.

In the UK,  KJ839 was fitted with a pair of Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprops. based at Bitteswell near Rugby.

And KJ829 went to Rolls-Royce to test the RR Dart engines.
