Douglas DC 7C Revel + corrections

Recommended Posts

While on the pen subject, I have also used, the Molotow Chrome pen, and that little beauty , although not 100% perfect is sure close and can hide all sorts of little blemishes.... it works a charm.. give it a try, comes in 3 sizes, and can actually be refilled..... I found it most useful, so far for doing the compression cylinders on landing gear...... way better than silver paint and way easier than foil......

the Molotow Chrome pen,

Saw these at a trade stand at a model show last year. Looks very good! A few club members got them........ And I should have too.

I will next time I see them!

I picked up a cheap one in a stationary shop instead.

And it's in the bin already!

Some people are just slow learners 😀

But I do have a Rotring Pen at •50mm which is pretty much what I think you're talking about.

Really handy and the ink is top class and fairly permanent- as in fade resistant.

I really need to press on with this plane though, instead of reading about stuff!

A DC 3 with turboprops.??

What ever next...?!?

I used to see them stooging around overhead in West Cornwall practicing, flying out of RNAS Culdrose.

Big, heavy, cumbersome things.... There's 30tons and more hanging off that main bearing!

I knew a Navy lad who worked on them.

But I'm moved away from there.

The RN call them the "Merlin"

RNAS Culdrose

I built with about 8 others two 101 mechanical/ maintenance trainers at Weston-super-Mud and relocated/ Comissioned one to Westlands' training school at Yeovil and the other at Lockheed Martin's Merlin Training Flight , RNAS Culdrose  Feb 98 - Jan 99. Each had real Gear boxes Main ,inter and tail with full set of Blades, main and tail rotors, one real Engine each that could be moved to any of the 3 engine bays,. I built and functioned the swinging tail on both. A fuel tank , which I built one for each trainer . One the best contracts I'd been on. Also had to play with one of the pre production prototypes  at Culdrose. Remember the Air Day there sat on the grass all day and getting paid . Their Security at the Gate was a 'mare . Spent most of the first hour's work queueing so they could tell me who I really was ! It was nothing like  RAF Station , got a  weather report over the Tannoy every 5 minutes .

Well @bzn20 I don't think there's very much I can tell you about the Merlin that you don't already know 😀

I've done a few Culdrose Air Days, but I started to lose interest due to lack of planes.

Progress on nacelles and wings...

So that's foil the whole wing surface (I didn't do the nacelles though) and then mask and paint.

Got some 166 on wingtip hi Vis panels as a base coat.

Then a wash of yellow. I was given the tip some time ago here on BM-- for reds and oranges like these a yellow base works great. Really puts a bit of life into the final colour.

I've got a coat of red on top, and it's going to need another.

I made an  estimate... a best guess... of the size of the panel, using this,

I'll have a go at the black leading edge panels. Radio navigation aids?

My little camera isn't making a very good job of replicating the orange red on the airframe.

See if I can adjust it a bit.

It's better than the pictures suggest. Honest!😉

That any better?

I used ordinary enamel paint.

The Humbrol 166 is the light grey semi-gloss over the wings and nacelles.

I used that as a base coat/primer.

Matt finish would be better, but it is what I had at hand.

Quite thin coats, esp the yellow.

Don't need it building up too thick.

That's it, the wings are ON...!

With all the dry fitting and sliding together, I was fairly confident about the joints.

Unlike several other parts and joints on the kit, the wings fit to the fuselage brilliantly.

Following this sequence of building suits the foil process, but it can cause real problems if there's filling and blending to do on a major joint like this.

But no need to worry about glue squidging out...... the foiled plastic is totally protected.

I got the undercarriage and some other bits assembled underneath and she's standing on her dainty feet.

Tail up. That steel nut and bolt up front certainly did the trick...!

I'll get painting later. The wheels are just popped on.

Let me run this past you though.

I picked up a Hobbyboss Easy Build F84. In 1/72.

It's remarkable!

Moulding is astonishing, 2option decal sheet looks superior. Tanks, rockets, two seat options etc.

I got change out of £6 !

How is that even possible??

To design and engineer, mould and manufacture, coordinate, package perfectly, ship around the world, import and warehouse, and distribution to model shops where the guy can sell it and make a profit for less than £6....??

It's nuts!

I broke the leg off and drilled out the fixing hole to 2mm, to take the diameter of the leg, and fitted it back in.

Wise decision Rob, now she looks better 👍

I think so too. And the staircase is a better fit under the door entrance.

Getting a bit of a shine on...

Couldn't resist trying out with the foil to see how the fine etched details came through.

Very nice, as it turns out!

Can I put down and let it wait, that's the thing.....
