lasermonkey
As promised in the What's Flying Over Your House thread, here's the first lot of photos taken at this year's fly-in. These are the pics taken with the zoom lens on my DSLR. The standard lens recently broke, so I had to use my wife's awful Fuji camera to take the close-up pics, and I haven't managed to get the pics off the SD card as yet! Tiger Moths first! Cheers, Mark. 6
lasermonkey
The weather was glorious over the whole weekend. I would recommend that anyone who has an interest in de Havilland aeroplanes should come along next year or better still, some to the Gathering Of Moths which I think is happening later in the year. Last year's was excellent! Hornet Moths next! Note the buzzard in the background! Minutes earlier, there was a red kite stooging around. Cheers, Mark. lasermonkey
Other de Havillands, starting with a couple of Leopard Moths: During take-off, Mike November veered alarmingly to the right, causing several people to voice their concerns out loud. I have to admit, I thought she was going particularly slowly as she got airborne and I didn't think it was going to end well for a few moments! There were also a couple of Chipmunks: Matey in the rear seems pretty happy with his ride! ..and a DH84 Dragon... Cheers, Mark. 5
lasermonkey
Here's the non- de Havilland stuff: The BBMF's Dakota did a fly-by: ...and I noticed this C-130 just after, considerably higher! ..some Miles aeroplanes. I'm a sucker for Miles aeroplanes too. That's all for now. I'll post more once I have them downloaded from the SD card. Cheers, Mark. 6

roys
Miles Messenger looks ace & I wonder what the low wing monoplane is? (Just before the Dakota shots) Edited July 4, 2018 by roys

goon
Lovely photos. I'm not familiar with the Leopard or Hornet Moths - what beautiful machines.
lasermonkey
Right then! I'm back after a much needed week's holiday and I have finally managed to get all the photos off the SD card. It's obvious that I need to spend a bit of time with the wife's camera, but most of them came out ok, after a little manipulation in Photoshop. Again, I'll do Tiger Moths first..... Cheers, Mark. John Masters
Marvellous! It proves the amazing design team who put pen to paper back then. Such utility combined with style. Wonderful photos, thanks.
lasermonkey
Hornet Moths next! I believe that these are all DH 87Bs. The collection itself used to have a Hornet Moth (G-ADND), but apparently it wasn't popular with the public for some reason. I haven't seen 'ND since she was sold, which is a shame. It's good to know that there are a few still knocking around though. I think it's a very elegant aeroplane. Cheers, Mark. janneman36
Very nice report and great pics Mark, can't wait to go the next weekend... The atmosphere is really great at Old Warden. Cheers, Jan
lasermonkey
Some of the other de Havilland designs. Leopard Moths first. I believe that this is the first time I had seen G-ACMN. I have a niggling feeling that so far, I have failed to get any decent shots of G-ACUS from the front. Some aeroplanes are just elusive. I have even fewer of Puss Moth G-AAZP, which always seems to be tucked away at the back on the rare occasions that I see her. I would have loved to see her at this event. Maybe at the Gathering Of Moths, if it's on this year? The Dragon Rapide which lives at Old Warden. I took my first flight in a Dragon Rapide. A DH 84 Dragon. This is the only one I've seen. A couple of Chipmunks. Cheers, Mark.
lasermonkey
And finally, the non-DH stuff. Focke-Wulf Fw 44. Miles Messenger. I'm a sucker for Miles aircraft too. It looks as if the Gathering of Moths is at RAF Henlow this year, on the 12th August. Luckily, Henlow isn't too far away, so I'll see if I can get there. There are plenty of other photos of this year's charity fly-in on my Flickr album, which can be found here. Cheers, Mark.

Cracking photos and it looks like the weather was perfect. The gathering of Moths is going to be at RAF Henlow on Sunday 12 August, BUT it is not a public event this time (Moth Club members only) and all intending visitors must book in advance. Apparently due to a double booking it had to be changed this year. As far as I know that is the only British Dragon flying at the moment but the Aer Lingus Dragon has attended a couple of times when the event was at Woburn. I would have loved to attend. I was lucky enough to get to see one of the Woburn gatherings. I wish I'd had a decent camera at the time. Oh well, maybe next year. Thinking about it, I may well have seen the Aer Lingus Dragon. I'll have to take a peek though my old photos. Cheers, Mark.
