My Newbie builds

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've been back into modelling the last couple of years and although not up to the standards of the builds on here, I'm happy enough

I'm halfway through the belkits manta and think a F1 car will be next

Any pointers to improve gratefully received

Thanks

Ian

If those are your first two models since your return, I think you've made a great start. Despite zooming in on the Subaru (couldn't seem to with the Escort), there's only a couple of small suggestions I can add, although I've only been returned for a similar amount of time myself. Firstly, get hold of some Microsol (or equivalent) - it would have helped no end where that side decal has struggled to go down. And secondly, if there is a way to get the body under cover for the first few minutes until the paint hardens it would reduce the amount of dust (although I can never seem to get rid of all of it).

But great start, looking forward to the Manta:clap2:

Thanks Spiny

I do use micro sol and set now, the Subaru was the first model I finished after getting back and I used the Humbrol decal stuff which isn't very good

Think the dust must be on the lens as there isn't that much on the model even now 🤔

I'd never thought of covering it over though after painting, but I will in the future, thanks

Two nice builds of cars driven by two great British drivers - Roger was a 'hero' of mine when growing up, got to talk to him briefly at the end of a stage on the 1976 RAC, his second win on the event. Really nice guy....

Both builds look pretty good, personally when I have big decals like that on the side of the scooby I cut away as much of the carrier film as I can. Also when the decal is dry I'd run a new scalpel blade through the decal on the door shut line (I personally also like to put a black wash in all the shut lines on the car, but that's a matter of personal taste, I know some car modellers are dead against the idea!)

PS one other thing Ijust noticed, you've painted the side indicator repeater on the Scooby body colour. I'd be tempted to leave it now as it's very close to some decals, but in future you might want to mask them off, paint them silver and when dry paint over that with some clear orange. If you have steadier hands than mine, you could try freehand painting it if you wanted!

Thanks Keith

I'd never noticed the repeater to be honest, I noticed that the bezels on the night spots are body colour and silver 🙄

I'm trying the panel line wash on the manta I've got on the bench at the minute, so we'll see how that goes

Hi there . Both cars look great . With the Imprezza , painting the  window surrounds Matt black would have improved it . You need a steady hand for painting that on though . It's something I hate doing on my models . The mark 1 looks spot on . I keep promising to get that kit . Two great classic rally cars done really well .

Well for first time builds they look good to me.

This hobby has a steep learning curve. Most of which we forget as we get older!

Build what you like, take your time and learn from the errors of others.

BTW, Decades ago I took a Girlfriend to a country pub.

As we sat there, in walked Roger Clark & Gerry Marshall!

Both heroes of mine, but I was to dumbstruck to talk to them.
