Special Hobby 1/72nd Baltimore,..... FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

                 I have been building Baltimore models over the years and have decided to add another to the collection,...... but I have two choices, both from the Mediterranean Twins decal sheets which I researched for Xtradecal;

or,...

Mk.V 13 Sqn Royal Hellenic AF, Italy 1943, prior to departing for Greece (this version had a new fin/rudder with a rudder balance at the top, as seen on this model ,....however many units replaced the fin/rudder of their Mk.V`s with the salvaged items from the earlier variants which did not have the balanced tip as the earlier style was more responsive, especially for formation flying);

Your Baltimore collection is really splendid Tony and, having picked one of these up (relatively) cheap when MPM were having a clearance of the Azur stuff (along with a Sea Otter and a Turbinelight Havoc), I'm interested to see how it goes together.

Cheers Fella`s and yes Chris,..... they are all Special Hobby/ Azure kits,...... all various boxings of the same basic kit.

Well I`ve started to stick the bits together,.... I`m not really going to town on the interior as very little can be seen,.....here is the cockpit interior;

And then the wings, tail and engine nacelles;

42271049644_17dbadfdda_k.jpgDSCF4337 by Tony OToole, on Flickr

One thing which has noggled me about the SH kit is the fact that the Martin mid upper turret, which was used on all versions from the Mk.IIIa onwards,... is far too small on this kit. To this end I have decided to use the fuselage section intended for the Mk.III version, with the 4 gun BP turret,.... which actually looks just right for the Martin turret and has the correct bulged sides,..... and then fit the left over Martin turret from a recent Airfix Mitchell model.

Here, you can see the SH kit Martin turret and fuselage section on the right,..... compared to the Airfix Mitchell Martin turret and the fuselage section for the SH kits Mk.III version on the left..... the latter has the correct bulged sides for the Martin turret and has had the inside ledge filed away so that the Airfix Mitchell turret can fit inside;

The Airfix Martin turret from a Mitchell and the SH Baltimore Mk.III fuselage section, all ready to fit;

42088056755_ab7a877516_k.jpgDSCF4339 by Tony OToole, on Flickr

And the turret in place on the completed fuselage,... compare this to the later Baltimore models posted earlier with their incorrect small Martin turrets and photos of the real aircraft;

I made a wing spar from a section of sprue and then fitted the wings on my tea tray workplace;

So a nice day in front of the telly watching the football and avoiding the sweltering heat outside!!!

Cheers

Glad you like the Baltimore collection folks,... hopefully the latest addition will fit in OK!

Well last night I fitted the engines, intakes etc and got most of the sanding done,...... almost ready for painting now!;

I think that I shall be going for R-Redwing in the day bomber scheme,........ and do the Malta based Coastal aircraft some other time.

That looks like it goes together very well. I'm finding myself rather attracted to the Baltimore rather tempted to dig my Frog one from the stash and give it a go.

Cheers Beard,..... yes it goes together quite well but all of the mating surfaces were sanded flat first before assembly,.... a bit like a vacform kit. The SH kit isn`t a great rendition of the Baltimore, the fuselage is not deep enough nor is the cross section of the forward fuselage correct as it should really nip in towards the top in a triangular shape,..... the Frog kit seems to get some areas correct but is wrong in others, especially the engines and cockpit canopy while the turret seems to replicate the 4 gin BP turret used by the Mk.III, but with 2 x .50 guns,..... I wonder what a mix of parts would produce?

Cheers

I thought you'd found a photograph to support a Baltimore with undersides that are partly Dark Earth, then I realised it was an 'in progress' shot.

Your work here isn't helping with my desire to do one for this GB but, luckily, I'm not in a position to do any modelling for the next week or so.

I`m sure you`ll find time,..... no I was just part way through painting the undersides.

Here is the model after being varnished, with the decals in place;

No chance, my wife is taking me to Wales for 10 days... I'm several hundred miles from my stash.

On the upside, I'll be visiting the Welsh Spitfire.

PS. The Baltimore is looking lovely.

Wow, I'm looking for Baltimore but it is hard to come by. 😪  And ridiculously over priced.  Very nice job Tony.

Thanks Franz,..... it is one of my favourite aircraft types,..... so I bought a few in and always snap them up if I find them cheap at a model show.....I got this one for £3!!!

Cheers
