UFO, his first live action series, is full of incredible designs, especially the Moon Base Interceptors. Three were on standby in their silos below the lunar surface, ready for launch against the Alien's craft as they approached Earth. Each Interceptor was armed with a single low yield nuclear weapon (The often criticised failing of the Interceptor, namely one missile apiece, was a deliberate script ploy so that the UFOs stood a chance of getting through to Earth). as well a three machine guns (in space?) which were never seen used in the show. Now courtesy of Studio 2 Models http://studio2models.webs.com/ there is a studio scale model, 23" length, approx 1:24th scale. The main body halves are cast in fibre glass reinforced P-38 car body repair putty: (150mm/6" ruler for scale.) The missile, as well as other parts, are cast in white resin. Main engine bell: RCS side pods, landing skids, cockpit rear wall: Aluminium sheet and sections are provided if you want to build the landing gear from metal, rather than use the resin. Close up of the cockpit wall, and main engine insert: Winglets, cockpit instrument panel, RCS thrusters and some rather familiar looking greeblies for the engine bays: Close up of the greeblies: I have already cut open the cockpit opening, creating a blizzard of dust! PS - Nothing wrong with MGs or other conventional weaponry in space, in fact it is massively more deadly up there.....One of the Soviet Salyuts was armed with an auto-cannon! The Salyut 3, although called a "civilian" station, was equipped with a "self-defence" gun which had been designed for use aboard the station, and whose design is attributed to Nudelman.[1] Some accounts claim the station was equipped with a Nudelman-Rikhter "Vulkan" gun, which was a variant of the 23 mm Nudelman aircraft cannon, or possibly a Nudelman NR-30 30 mm gun.[12] Later Russian sources indicate that the gun was the virtually unknown (in the West) Rikhter R-23.[13] These claims have reportedly been verified by Pavel Popovich, who had visited the station in orbit, as commander of Soyuz 14.[12] Due to potential shaking of the station, in-orbit tests of the weapon with cosmonauts in the station were ruled out.[1] The gun was fixed to the station in such a way that the only way to aim would have been to change the orientation of the entire station.[1][12] Following the last manned mission to the station, the gun was commanded by the ground to be fired; some sources say it was fired to depletion,[12] while other sources say three test firings took place during the Salyut 3 mission.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salyut_3 7 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
HL-10 Posted July 4, 2018 Author Share Posted July 4, 2018 I made my own cockpit rear wall as the one supplied is too narrow. It was made from perspex with various pieces added to detail it. Once installed, I brought the two fuselage halves together, using 2 part epoxy resin, and then sealed up and filled the gaps with P-38 car body filler: I added the VTOL exhaust with a suitable piece of tube. HL-10 Posted July 17, 2018 Author Share Posted July 17, 2018 Pilot fitted and canopy attached. The central frame is a strip of plastic card. The piping around the canopy was made using solder. I have upgraded the kit's resin main undercarriage legs. When I built my Bandai Interceptor I scratch built that rear partition and uses some PE for a Wellington bomber for the instrument panels I also used a 1:48 scale pilot figure from PJ Producctions - I think it was a French Helicopter pilot. Does the kit come with decals? The ones in the bandai kit are pretty bad "spanglish" nonsense and I had to print my own.
