JWM
Hi, I will try to do three interwar biplanes, two of them having roots in WWI, but still active in WWII or Spanish Civil War. First is Avro 504 N in Belgian colours, which I will try to convert from A-model MU-1,a Russian build Avro 504 K. I will use 7 cylinder engine from Cierva C30 I would like to do her in Belgian colours from 1940, like here: Besides u/c and engine the difference in aeilerons, fuel tank and? = that is all what I recognized so far. Ailerons and rounded The second is Airco DH 9 in Spanish Civil War colours (likely Nationalists) This will be conversion from Polikarpov R-1, Russian version of DH 9 A, so wings have to be smaller by chord and by wingspan and front of fuselage will be different as well. The kit is that : I have already made smaller wings Today I made some paintings and start to cut fuselge and then I realized, that first I should meke foke of initial state, sorry for that: I hope this is still below 25% of advance in build. There is instruction which is very cool: Likely 34-18 on spoky wheels published recently by @Artie in one of last posts here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235039778-airco-dh9-aviación-militar/ The third one will be Vickers Vildebeest on floats OOB like here: I am doing now 3 other model (2 in WIP) so I will start slowly... Wez
All interesting subjects and I have to say J-W, you're much braver than me contemplating three such subjects especially with the work involved in the Avro and the DH9 (the Wildebeest seems almost simple in comparison, which I'm sure it isn't)! Good luck in this GB, I look forward to seeing your efforts come to fruition.
JWM
Those builds are something I was thinking about since some more than five years perhaps... We will see! Regards J-W
JWM
correction on those photos: it is clear, that Belgian 504 Ns have rectangular ailerons, not like Dannish one.... Regards J-W Edited June 23, 2018 by JWM
JWM
Hi, My work on Aero is now a bit stopped due to time needed for drying of putty I started to work on DH 9 and Aro 504 N. Since the most pleasent part of work is scratch conversion of engines (both Avro 504 and DH-9) I did work with insides much faster than I could expect Starting with Avro 504: Here both (still without seat belts and instrument pannels) Seat belts from Tamiya tape painted olive green I glued fuselages and left for drying. Giorgio N
Welcome to the GB ! Love this kind of subjects, interwar types offer so many choices of interesting markings ! Good job on the cockpits, look really neat. Looking forward to more !
JWM
Hi realized that I did not shown drawing, which I am basing on to do conversions. They are photos not scans, just to keep copyrights . DH 9 from Merinda & Mercado book Avro 504 N (surprisingly both consistent! ), found in Net, scaled to 1/72 I have found in draver a piece of plastic suitable for new nose of 504 N: I recognized that it is a fragment of nose from Revell RF4E Phantom, which I had about 1975...!!! I think I did it in different version, as F4B likely (?). I remember my F4B Phantom from my school days in US Navy livery wit red part of top, but I think it was rather Airfix kit... So where this RF4F nose came from? Covered with first layer of Tamiya putty: The upper wing in central section is different in 504N tan in 504 K because a new organization of fuel tanks came. Moreover, slimer central section improved visibility from pilot cockpit. I made this modification: I did in evening also some work on nose of DH9 to be cont. Giorgio N
Nice work Jerzy ! Love the attention you're giving to the various small structural differences in these aircrafts
JWM
Hi, Sanding and adding filler and sanding... Scratch conversion of nose of DH 9. Now it is like this: With Avro 504 it goes faster. I used upper wing for put in line lower wings The front of fuselage is ready, I glued tail and lower wing as you see I made also fuel tanks below upper wing To be continued Cheers J-W
Wez
Great work and great progress Jerzy, also inspiring to see someone with the courage to make such changes. Keep up the good work!
JWM
Thanks! Interesting is that "504 N" is preserved in museum in Denmark The riging is blocking taking place in the front cockpit - it seems to be available only from back! JWM
P.S. Very helpful here for me is "walkaround of 504" here on BM, althought it is "K" version but details of riging stays the same I hope... stevehed
Very impressive. Got both on my very long to do list. BTW both sides used the DH9 in the early stages of the SCW and later as trainers. Just thinking that Republican colours are easier to apply. Regards, Steve

Regards, Steve In book by Miranda & Mercado "Aviones en la Guerra Civil...." even Avro 504 k is quoted as machine used in SCW. But there are no photos, so I decided to do 504N from Belgium. The Republicans DH9 are not documented on photos, mainly the photos are for pre-war machines and for Nationalists. Therfore I am thinking on Nationalist side machine. Of course I have still floatplanes for a year "production" So after a week pause due to a duty tip a spent many hours today on riging the wings of Avro 504: It was a bit advanced, since I decided to make the double cables where they were double ... I worked a bit also with engine. The main part as well as exhaust pipe came from Cierva C-30 (I was converting to Leo 30, so orginal Azur engine left in a drawer. The propeller is made from A-model Polikarpov I-5 wooden (spare in my case) prop. I cut out spinner and made hub by drilling 8 holes around and one central, then glueing short rods. It is rotable! Giorgio N
I'm always envious of modellers who can add all the rigging to a biplane so easily !

But wait a second! - who told that it was easy? I took me some 10 hours,. in practice whole Sunday with a break for UK GP in Formula 1...
