Sherman in Normandy

An M4(105) unless I'm very much mistaken.

Like most surviving Shermans there's a mixture of parts visible.  3 different wheel types: it would have been built with the pressed spoke type.  This is a Chrysler built tank and would have been built with the "fancy" sprockets fitted to all Chrysler M4s, VVSS and HVSS, rather than the plain disc type now fitted.  But tyres, wheels and sprockets wore out in service anyway and were replaced with whatever was available - never mind finding the original types as spares 75 years later.  As a representative WW2 tank the plain disc wheel is a little dubious.

For some unexplained reason the US in NW Europe ended up with about 100% over-capacity of 105mm tanks and hundreds remained in depots.

There's a chap local to me who does restorations and work on a fair few types of military vehicle.

Some years ago, he brought a Sherman along to the village fete - my wife suggested that he did pleasure rides around the cricket square!
