Jumping in with this kit - it's already considered the most ropey box:

Huge thanks to Julien, who supplied me with some decals.

A peek inside the battered box

Those Academy decals from Julien (thanks) enable me to make this TBM3.

And I'm looking into whether a darkened underside is appropriate.

I found a pic of one from the attacks on Tokyo time.

Tim, if you google VT-84 Avenger, you'll get plenty of photos as well as profiles, die cast models etc, I'm not seeing any dark undersides, the Avengers wings folded in such a way that the undersides were not exposed from above, unlike a Corsair for instance. I did wonder what you were doing with those decals, exactly the same plan as I have for rebuilding my one in time, I have a Academy TBF which will become a Tarpon, probably with Frog decals. I'm keen to see how this comes together. You'll need a good gloss surface & plenty of decal set or even better Klear to stop them silvering.

Found the photo’s on google so ownership belongs to the original owners. Just posting for informational purposes.

That's the sort of thing I'm looking for.  Just realised they're all radar equipped though.

Tim, AFAIK, VT-84 as shown in the photo in your post above did not operate RADAR equipped night night bombers. The decals you got from Julien will only be suitable for one with Insignia White undersides, but, if you want to adapt them to something like the ones Dennis has posted, then that's a whole different story.

That matches the conclusion I've arrived at, thanks Steve. Anyway,  that's the build I'll do.

Just done some interior painting, and de-seaming of parts.

before this really gets going , here are my ae as earlier Airfix Avengers.

First in typical FAA scheme.

Airfix_TBM3_Tarpon.jpg

Not the correct version for this scheme, I learned after the event.

Overall blue US Navy scheme

And a post-war FAA plane.

Nice Avengers - looks like you know the kit and subject well.

Looking forward to the next instalment to add to this impressive line-up.

Cheers.. Dave.

Well, kicking off with some interior decoration, and pre-assembly.

Glazing is so mankey, this build may well be blacked out cockpit.

I don't know how big the rivets would have been on the real thing but I think they really set this off....top job fella! 👍

Airbrushed the sides, really pleased with that Humbrol 144 from the Mitchell - so used that.

Looks really good in the three colour scheme. I don't know why Humbrol didn't do Hu 144 in acrylic :(

You are on the last lap now!

Adrian

Well I airbrushed dark blue upper surfaces earlier today, so looks even better now. Off to Jet Age for an event, but photos later tonight.
