You can't finish her in 507A and miss all that wonderful colour Whatever colours you go for - with such contradictory evidence in abundance - no-one can criticise. I'm fast becoming a huge fan of The Sovereign Colourcoats (Sorry!) To my mind Jamie and his team have brought a rationality to the whole subject which is compelling. Loving this build Rob Thanks Rob. warreni
Hello everyone. Unfortunately the Rodney is stalled while I get the paints I need for that 1943 camo scheme. Thanks to Jamie from Sovereign hobbies I now have the means to make my paper masks. I have already printed them out and they can hibernate for a little while. In the meantime I have decided to build a subject I have had in ny stash for well over 5 years, the Dragon 1/350 USS Gearing. Will start up another blog in just a minute. See you there! warreni
Thanks everyone. Well my plans for the Rodney's sister ship, the Nelson, was just going to be build it OOB, but, damn you Luckymodel!!, they have reducesd the Pontos set to a level I just couldn't refuse. I am weak.... 😭 💀 Edited January 4, 2019 by warreni 1

It is the juxtaposition of B5 (a strong blue) and 507C (a distinctly bluish grey) which makes MS4 give this impression. I say this to avoid temptation to replicate a perceived brownishness in it, or the results will look "loud" to say the least! Jamie, thanks you for your amazing investment in this. I have some future plans to build some WWII RN destroyers and I'll make sure I get your paints, not just for accuracy but also as a token of appreciation for your enthusiasm.

warreni
After a lengthy saga I finally have the paints I need! Will be spraying the hull this weekend weather permitting. It is too big to spray in the house.
daveellen
Looking good. I am making the 1/200 HMS Nelson at the moment. The instructions on the MK1 etch sets I have are a mystery to me. Having fun though
Mattlow
Hi Warren Lovely, intricate work. I'm glad the camo conundrums are clearing - look forward to seeing some paint on this ship. I wonder if, on that little 'weather station' you put on the platform way back, the flat item with little disks at the end is actually an anemometer and the disks need bending through 90 degrees ( they would be the 'cups' that catch the wind)... just a thought. warreni
I think you may be correct Matt. Only problem now is the weather has turned and having to paint it outside due to its size means I have to wait for a warm day.. sigh..
warreni
A miracle has occured, and its not even Christmas! Amazingly after months of inaction due to a severe lack of correct colours the hull is almost finished!! Couple of touchups and she will be ready for the rest of the build, oh and the anti-fouling paint and boot top. warreni
Greetings all. Can anybody tell me with any certainty what colour the steel decks were on the Rodney, and what colour the various vents etc were. TIA Warren
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Certainty is a difficult thing with this, but dark grey is most likely. Obviously those are Snyder & Short matched paints you've been sold, but I think you may have inadvertently switched the MS4 for MS4A? That very pale greenish shade should be a medium tone neutral grey on Rodney. The "MS4" from brands copying Snyder & Short's chips will be a bit too coffee colour to be strictly correct, but the tone of them isn't a million miles away. The Snyder and Short MS4A is a fairly greenish shade which isn't correct - MS4A was a very light neutral grey. If you use the MS4 you have though it will look close enough.
warreni
Thanks Jamie but that didn't actually answer my question..
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Well, someone will need to have something pretty concrete to prove that the dark grey suggestion is incorrect. This dark grey was usually something similar to 507A, BS 32 Dark Battleship Grey and MS2.
warreni
Ah.. sorry mate I got lost in the further explaination. I still have a little MS2 in a colourcoats can so will have to see if I can find something close.... Thanks again.
warreni
A couple of shots.. a bit late but hey I was busy modelling.. I also fixed the links in the earlier post about the painting of the camo on the hull. And I have sprayed the Hull Red, boot top and touched up the bits where some paint bled under the masking tape. Most was around blisters on the hull. Edited July 16, 2019 by warreni

warreni
OK. I have a new computer and am gradually transferring everything across but emails still aren't working. Luckily the old one still is.. OK. Lets start with the photos not everyone can see.. A few PE frets being painted ready for installation.. Then we have some shots of the bow.. And finally, for the Rodney, two shots of the hull after camo was applied.. Then, just to prove I wasn't lying around doing nothing while I waited for my paints I finished these.. ArtickWarspite
Which brand of paints did you end up using in the end? I'm just starting the 1/200 Nelson, and getting reliable RN paints here across the ditch is almost impossible. Really enjoy watching this come together! I'm learning a lot!
