Hasegawa 1/72 Convair F-106A Delta Dart kit C3/JS-054

Recommended Posts

One from the past, finished 13Dec1981.

Built not quite OOB as a USAF ADC F-106A "Updated" Delta Dart, "Bones Crusher"-90094 of the 87th FIS post 1972.

A very good kit (for the time) that resulted in a very enjoyable build and IMHO one of the best models I've ever built. 😎

To make an updated "Six" I had to fit a Vulcan cannon in a gondola in the weapons bay made from a Hasegawa F-4E early cannon fairing pinched from the 5000th Phantom kit (it didn't need it ) and a length of Slater's plastic tube, a frame less canopy simply made from the kit's canopy top frame detail being gently polished out, data-link aerials, anti-col light and intake from plastic card and Slater's plastic rod as well as detailing the cockpit and pilot. The weathering went well and I like how it came out. Just didn't know that "Sixes" were kept virtually pristine during their ADC service and the "weathering was inappropriate.

The only problem now is the very noticeable "yellowing" and lightening of the Hasegawa decals, very annoying and seems to be a problem with their decals. This has high-lighted where I mixed my own colour match for the red on the bull's head on the tail and painted in the missing red areas around the tail where the decals didn't reach 😨

Great modelling  Faaman, your model has held up well and looks very realistic.  I have a Hasegawa Fuji Blue Impulse from the same time periosd and the decals have all cracked and disintegrated.  Yours have stood up much better.

It is great to see these kits from the past getting an airing.  The Dart has stood up well all these years which is a tribute to your modelling Faaman.

Yellowing of transfers and glazing is one of those pains for those of us with old kits.

A worthy build of a classic kit very well photographed.

I think you could be very busy on here with the amount of kits you built in the past.

Thanks gents for the kind words, glad to see the "old Dart" still has it's admirers 🤗🍻

Kelt I'm not sure why the pitot's colour scheme would be difficult. Scale/size does not matter, it's not that small. It's a lot longer than what's protruding and to to paint it, it was first painted white over it's scale length with a silver base flare. Then the long base was put in a pin vise and simply rotated slowly to apply the red. What will be a challenge will be the Otaki 1/144 scale Sixes I have in the stash with one to be done as "Bones Crusher" 😎

Colin my decals were placed down on Testor's Gloss Cote from one of those small rattle cans and when the decals were fully dried the whole lot was sealed with another two cotes of the Testor's gloss. Then weathering was done.

Adey thanks for the great comment on my photography, I do try after much instruction on digital photography from the WIFEU. The prob with the Hasegawa decals slowly yellowing over time is not exclusive to that company, Matchbox, Fujimi, Revell Germany, and Monogram decals of the same vintage do it too. As you can see, I'll soon post pics of the Dagger and others that I consider worthy. Thanks again mate 👍 Hmmm, building models, guess I'll have to get my mojo back, it's taken a serious beating just lately as a very itinerant MPM Fw kit is "testing" me somewhat 🤬

Cheers all 🍻🍻

Whoa!! Never saw that 😨 Thanks for the heads up Martin, will be corrected very soon . . . . .

All these years and a "commended" at a model show in early '82 and the nose gear was around the wrong way the whole time!!

After I came back from the RAN Recruit School I had a month or so before I had to take up my posting to HMAS Albatross so I spent the intervening weeks in a binge of dating, drinking and hobbying. Guess the first two may've been the reason for the reversed gear as I was rushing a bit . . . . sounds good anyway . . . .

Cheers all🍻🍻
