Courageous
Hi BMers. Here I present my recently completed NA FJ-1 Fury using the Valom 1/72 kit, WIP here. Life started with the intention of building it OOB but soon decided to do something a little different with it and turn it into one of the Bendix Trophy race aircraft and fit it with larger 290 US gal fuel tanks. The kit builds up well as long as you remember it's a limited-run kit as the locating of parts is a bit 'iffy', check your references. The replacement tanks were 3D printed by a buddy of mine and secured to the tips using 5-minute epoxy, A little PPP was used at the tank/ wing join, wing root and tail plane/ fuselage areas. The model was then primed with Halfords grey primer and painted with 'Post War USN Glossy Sea Blue' (ACUS35) enamel paint by Colourcoats and finished off with kit decals and Tamiya Satin Varnish. BuAerNo.120350/101 - 2nd Bendix Trophy (Lt Cdr EP Aurand) My thanks go to @Sabrejet, @Tailspin Turtle and others for their contributions. I have never seen an FJ-1 on the model show circuit, let alone a Bendix aircraft...not that many will notice the difference. Stuart

Meatbox8
That looks great. These early, straight wing jets are full of character. Your model has captured it beautifully.

Sabrejet
Nice one: those tanks were worth doing - you need a 'standard' FJ-1 now, so you can see the difference!

Sabrejet
Inspired by yours, I've just ordered a Valom FJ-1. I doubt I'll get round to it for a bit but am looking forward to doing an Oakland NARTU machine sometime.

Terry1954
Just made it here to see this one although I saw you were just about there in WIP. Really nice job Stuart, and I think you made some good calls on the final job! I pulled out my Valom Fury last night, inspired by this, but must get latest Sabre done first! kapam
Love it! They made some really cool-looking planes in the early jet days. Excellent work on a kit that would have needed patience and skill. 😎
John R
Nice one! I was hoping to have finished my version of the prototype from the SIGA kit by now but am stymied by being unable to reproduce the tiny lettering at the top of the fin. Which version of Glossy Sea Blue did you use? John
Courageous
From the photos I've seen, their looks like their are more little stencils than come in the kits but ho-hum. I used 'Post War USN Glossy Sea Blue' (ACUS35) enamel paint by Colourcoats. Stuart
John R
They are tiny. In the past I have got around this by using white decal paper to print in white on a blue background but this time I have been unable to reproduce the blue used on the model. If you don't get it exactly right it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Vingtor
Very nice model! The FJ-1 really looks like a Mustang with a jet engine. The missing link between Mustang and Sabre. Nils

Courageous
Cheers guys. Nils, I tend to agree about seeing the Mustang in the FJ-1, I believe some Mustang parts were used on the FJ-1. Stuart
