AdriaN (MLT) Posted June 13, 2018 Share Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) Over the past 2 years... I've developed a 'thing' for building OLD vintage kits. 1:72 kits. I like the fact that they are so small, take up small spaces on the desk and they are simple to build. This is the second 1970s kit I'm building. One was the Airfix Super Mystere, while others were re-boxings of old kits (Heller). Since my last 3 models were French aircraft in French markings... well... might as well continue with another French! This will be the third model in 'Patrouille de France' markings. For a 1975 kit i think it's pretty detailed! More panel detail than 80/90s and 00's kits for sure! Lovely rivet detail which I hope will not get buffed down. 😬 White decals seemed to have yellowed SLIGHTLY. unfortunately I can't find replacements. There is one thing you should do: remove all those horrid rivets!!! The Fouga is too gracile and small an airplane to take such disfigurement ! Have fun! AdriaN (MLT) Posted June 13, 2018 Author Share Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) The sink marks in the seat are in an awkward position so fill and sand. i thought id get away with it when i scratch build the seat belts and cover the spots! Panels and sticks in place. Lead pellets were used as nose weight. Finally we have a TINY Magister. It will need a lot of sanding and some filler. I must be carefull not to touch the panel lines and rivets. I forgot to mention... i WILL NOT re-scribe the model. I hate rescribing and i am bad at it! AdriaN (MLT) Posted July 10, 2018 Author Share Posted July 10, 2018 (edited) Canopy is very complex to stay masking, and the details are too soft/not raised enough to be able to shape and cut out masking tape accurately. So i decided to buy a mask set. This is for the Valom kit. Its the best i could find. Unfortunately it doesn't fit exactly and my canopy seems to be either to small or too wide in certain parts. The summer heat is putting me off building and its too hot for paints to dry normally and to handle. This is probably one of the few models which after painting, even in gloss... doesn't seem to show up any seam lines. Usually not matter how much i fill and sand.. seam lines always show up! Canopy masked up with masking set and masking fluid. The masks didn't fit very well! i thought the valom mask would fit on airfix. Couldnt find an airfix set anyway. Sprayed black first. Primed using mr.finishing surfacer 1500. First time using it and it went on great. Only problem is its so hot here that it dried instantly! In order to know where the blue and red have to intersect under the white decal.. i scanned the decals, printed them and cut them out and took the "decals" outline, then started painting. "Model Air - ferrari red" was sprayed on and it took MANY many coats to build up a good layer! Revell aqua Blue was next and it went on really well. Revell aqua never give me problems Next stage is white decals and lets hope the decals go on as planned! Only problem was... the decals were VERY thin, so the red showed through the white decals. One decal thinner than the other... Here its clearly visible. I decided to mask up the main wings and spray with white, since they were the most visible. All this was done after a coating of Klear on decals. Decals on.. white re sprayed.. panels washed.. (BY THE WAY I RE-SCRIBED SOME PANEL LINES) Big mess on the belly. I had to cut out a hole in the decal since, there was a big piece of plastic underneath, and the decal would crease when conforming to the shape. The touch up white paint was too bright and opaque and it showed up when compared to the faded white decal. With the touch up to the belly, hard to say from the photos but some sort of off white due to the main colour show through, maybe a tiny, really tiny touch of the colour in some white to tone it but try it first, you may have to experiment or say, its on the underside, she'll be OK. (made/boxed in 1975) it went together quite well and detail was quite good for an old kit! In fact i found it better than some kits today. Way better than a Heller kit. It was fun spraying blue paint and i really liked the rivet details, so i left them and did some re scribing on wings.
