John Masters
I present...Spitfire Mk. IXc, MH558, flown by Lt. Giorgos Smyrniotopoulos, Royal Hellenic AF, 1947. This is a real Cold Warrior, from the early days of that conflict. I think the Greek Civil War may have been the first real combat scenario of the Cold War, pitting as it did the pro-Western Loyalist factions against their one-time allies the Communist and Socialists. This is a KP kit and I had very few issues with the build save for some gaps in the wing roots. For the most part, an easy build and a fun one at that! Paints are all Vallejo Air and it has been weathered with Flory-Wash Sand mixed with a little Flory Light. Also, the salt/chipping technique worked well and I think I will continue to work with this. Nice and dusty, well-used. ΜΥΣΤΡΑΣ (Mystras) is an ancient Byzantine fortified city, about 8km from modern day Sparta. Whether the pilot was from there or whether he chose the name due to its historical significance (check wikipedia) I do not know. Love the eyes. In checking my stash I find that I have at least 6 Spitfires in foreign raiment. I think I may have to begin another when I get back from Athens this weekend. One can never have too many Spitfires. --John
John Masters
Another Spitfire from me... AZ Model's (or is it KoPro...? I lose track--ok...KoPro decals) Czechoslovakian Mk. IXe, 4th Air Reg., 2nd Air Div., flown by škpt. Karel Pošta, DFC, 1947. No issues here. Same moulds as the Greek Spitfire I recently finished, same kit. Some gaps in the wing roots, but otherwise it fell together quite easily. Paints are all Vallejo and Vallejo Air. My sincere thanks to Giorgio for the background on the correct spinner colour and also the excellent website on the Czechoslovakian 3rd Republic Air Force. I didn't realize that many of these pilots were eventually imprisoned by the communists for having flown with the British against their common fascist enemy. Too much western indoctrination, I suppose. Such terrible dualities during the Cold War...as Sean Connery's character said in 'Red October'--no medals, only casualties. I think this is the prettiest Spitfire I have ever built. I will continue my 'Spitfire A-Go-Go' with another Mk. IXc from the fledgling Israeli air force. Another AZ kit too, btw...Thanks Enzo!
Beard
Here's my attempt at one of the three Spitfires which we sold to Turkey. It's the Airfix 1/72 kit, brush-painted with Colourcoats and Humbrol enamels, the markings are from the Blackbird Models sheet. The build thread is here: Thanks to Giorgio for hosting.

John Masters
I present the FrankenSpit, aka, Spitfire D-130 of the fledgling Israeli Air Force, ca. July 1948. The story is that when the RAF departed Palestine, they left all of their junk behind. The Israelis took the fuselage and tail of 208 Sq. 'RG-W' which had been modified already for photo-recon. The engine and wings were salvaged from an Egyptian Mk.IX that had been shot down a few months before. The Mogen Davids and the tail stripes were all hand painted because time was of the essence! The nose panels came from the crash as well as the junk yard. This aircraft was eventually repainted completely so what I show is the aircraft with the mismatched nose panels and green primer everywhere else. All the paints are Vallejo Air and Vallejo. Decals are from the box and are, imho, a bit thin. I hand painted the stripes on the tail. Chipping was with a toothpick just after the colour went on so it was a little soft. When it was thoroughly dry I took a stiff boar's hair paint brush and 'scrubbed' the whole thing which actually gave it a little dull shine, if that makes sense. I weathered it with a little FloryWash Sand mixed with White. I think the build came out rather good even though there are some flaws. I can live with them! I hope you feel the same. Molte grazie to Giorgio for sending me the superb information from 'Spitfire: Star of Israel'. I have now ordered this book and will have it on my shelf soon! Enjoy! I'm off to Sweden, so to speak, and will start in on the Swedish Mk. XIX this evening. --John
vppelt68
Hawker Hurricane Mk.I "HC-451" Finnish Air Force, 1941 Airfix ragwing kit in 1:72 scale, OOB SBS Decals Humbrol enamels, brushed on of course Build time from monday to saturday, not even every day The Finnish "Warpaint" with yellow theater colours contrasts nicely with the as-delivered RAF camo. I built the other one earlier this year in the Hawker GB. Sorry for the dark pics. There's such a weather outside I don't dare to take these out for the pics! Thanks again to Giorgio N and Enzo Matrix for setting this up and running the circus! Now where did I leave that Airfix Ju 88...? V-P

John Masters
I present, Spitfire S.31, 3 Div. Flottilj 11,Flygvapnet, Nyköping, Sweden, 1949, built from the very nice Airfix kit, 1/72nd scale (what else?). All the paints are Vallejo Air and Vallejo. This was another thoroughly enjoyable build and, while I jump back into the 60s NATO/WarPac GB, I will be pondering whether I can squeeze in another post-war Spitfire before the Octiner 7th deadline. Nothing odd to report about this kit, no stumbles except for my own. Thanks again Giorgio and all the others in this very fine GB. I'll take a break from this for the moment but, the gods-be-willing-and-the-river-don't-rise, I'll be back next week with a SAAF Mk. XVIe Lowback. -John

Fifer54
Here is my entry for the "Brits Abroad" Group Build. I have built Special Hobby's 1/72 scale kit of the Blackburn Roc for this GB. Build Thread is here- "A Mythical Bird?" The Blackburn Roc was developed from Blackburn's Skua, which was Britain's first naval dive bomber, and the country's first deck-landing aircraft with flaps, retractable undercarriage and a VP propeller. The Roc first flew in December 1938, and was the first FAA aircraft to have a power-operated gun turret. Production Rocs were built by Boulton-Paul, and the Roc suffered from the same flaws as that company's Defiant fighter for the RAF- a performance penalty from the weight of the turret, and no other armament except the turret guns, which limited its effectiveness. Britain had a policy of support for Finland, and when a border dispute between Finland and Stalin's Soviet Union erupted into the Winter War in November 1939, the UK sold Finland a batch of 30 secondhand Blackburn Rocs. Unfortunately, by the time the aircraft were prepared, the Winter War was effectively over, and Finland lost interest in the deal. The first batch of aircraft had flown as far as Dyce (now Aberdeen Airport) in Northern Scotland.. Photographs taken there are the visual evidence of how these aircraft looked. It is reported that they wore standard Temperate Sea Scheme camouflage with a mid-fuselage demarcation, Finnish serials, and that while Finnish insignia were applied in the normal roundel positions, the big Blue Swastikas were covered over so that a white disc was the device worn. It probably would not have been advisable to fly the length of Great Britain in aircraft emblazoned with Big Blue Swastikas-sure to attract attention from anti-aircraft gunners in 1940! My model carries its swastikas because that's how the Rocs would have appeared in Finnish service . . . Thanks to the GB organisers for their efforts, and to all the participants for showing us their talents. Thanks to everyone who's given me support, inspiration and advice with this build. That's me done with this GB, I'm not entered in any others at the moment, though I may jump in to the tail end of another very soon . . .
Graham77
This is the Hawker Siddley AV-8A as flown by the US Marine Corps. It’s the Airfix 1/72 kit and is a lovely little kit (as is the GR 1). Here are the pictures. And finally with its British counterparts, the first and last Harriers (from the Airfix special edition kit) Looking through this GB Britain didn’t half export some awesome machines! Best Wishes Graham
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello Everyone ... Well its official I’m calling this build done. Id like to thank Giorgio first of all for allowing me to jump in with a late entry. Id like to thank everyone that helped me out along the way. This includes Giorgion, & @Troy Smith, @Learstang, and @Procopius for the gift of the kit. Without that it would not be. I knew only the very basics of VVS usage of the Hurricane. However have learned quite a bit. I intend on expanding that knowledge as well. My Hurrican doesn't exactly represent a specific unit or an aircraft. Its more of a general represntation of a Hurricane IIB that has seen its share of hard use and modifications. Modifications i have done are to replace the 8 core .303’s with the four larger calibre russian guns. The corresponding panel lines, and the addition of the six RS-82 rockets and rails. Without further talk i give you my White Hurricane with Red stars. I hope she passes muster folks. If you have questions, comments, or jokes please visit my build thread. Please look for the RFI in the aviation area soon. Dennis

John Masters
My final submission to this very inspiring Group Build, at least for me. I now have Spitfires on the brain! Many thanks to Giorgio for all of his incredible knowledge and support and patience. I present the Sword 1/72nd Spitfire Mk.XVIe, 5503, Air Operations School, SAAF, Langebaanweg, 1951. All the paints are Vallejo or Vallejo Air and the kit right out of the box except for the blue and white roundels which were taken from the Pheon 'Pup's in France' sheet. You can read about my errors in the WiP thread. Actually, I think they look a little better than those supplied by Sword. In any case, those Springboks look awfully nice and they are leaping in the correct direction on all fronts! I will continue my 'Spitfire A-Go-Go' in other WiP threads, but alas, not here. I have really loved being here in this GB and will bow out of all the GB threads until December when the Maritime GB begins. I will, however, be building at my usual pace and try to give a good WiP for you all to see, criticize, scorn or otherwise enjoy! Here's my Little Shark, or as they say in Afrikaans, 'Klein Haai'... Thanks everyone! See you around the forum...meet most of you in December for the Maritime Patrol event! --John
