tonyot
Hiya Folks, Another Spitfire that I want to build is a Mk.Vb operated by 40 Sqn SAAF in Italy wearing the modified scheme where Dark Green was added on top of the Mid Stone of the desert scheme, to better match the more temperate landscape. I`ll be tackling the 2nd aircraft in the photo for now; Spitfire-LFIX-SAAF-40Sqn-WRL-WRO-WRP-Sicily-1943-01 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Closer; Spitfire-LFIX-SAAF-40Sqn-WRL-WRO-WRP-Sicily-1943-01_NEW by Tony OToole, on Flickr a05125_1 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Here is the kit,.....I bought a few when Airfix had a sale, selling them for around a tenner each,.... always handy to grab a bargain and stash it for later!; DSCF4071 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4070 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4069 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Here is the decal sheet I`m using; s-l225 by Tony OToole, on Flickr I`ve pre painted the parts and will start the build tomorrow after the parts receive a watercolour wash to the interior; DSCF3454 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Cheers Tony Edited June 23, 2018 by tonyot
Rabbit Leader
Another kit in my stash that will no doubt get a second looking in the not too distant future. She'll look great in SAAF colours and compliment all your other MTO builds quite nicely. Cheers.. Dave
tonyot
Cheers Dave, I`ve got quite a bit done on this today; Watercolour wash on the interior, ready to be wiped off; DSCF4074 by Tony OToole, on Flickr The interior; DSCF4082 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4083 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Fuselage joined,..... ready to fit the section for the windscreen; DSCF4085 by Tony OToole, on Flickr And fitted,.... needs a bit of tape to keep it in place correctly; DSCF4086 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Wings being assembled and tailplane added to fuselage; DSCF4087 by Tony OToole, on Flickr And the wings and vokes filter added,.... a clamp holding the nose together fully; DSCF4093 by Tony OToole, on Flickr So I`ll be sanding it tomorrow, Cheers Tony

tonyot
Cheers Steve,..... it really is a superb kit this Airfix one,..... just wish they would do a Mk.Vc too! tonyot
Hiya Folks, Another update,..... I have applied the Dark Green disruptive camouflage; DSCF4166 by Tony OToole, on Flickr By the time of the Italian campaign many of the Spitfire Mk.V`s had been refurbished in Egyptian MU`s and this involved a repaint,........ late in 1943 the Day Fighter scheme was adopted in North Africa, ie Ocean Grey, Dark Green and MSG,..... with Sky band and spinner,..... and with smaller B Type upper wing roundels,...... and this aircraft appear to have gone through this programme. You can just see where the Sky band has been removed by overpainting it Dark Earth when the Spitfire arrived with 40 Sqn SAAF,..... which was a tactical recce unit and operated down in the weeds, hence the altered colour scheme. The painters in Egypt tended to create camouflage patterns which were not exactly to home based rules and this aircraft is no different, matching quite a few of these aircraft,...... one of the patterns was known as the Aboukir pattern after the MU based there. Here is my close up of the real aircraft; Spitfire-LFIX-SAAF-40Sqn-WRL-WRO-WRP-Sicily-1943-01_NEW by Tony OToole, on Flickr And here is another SAAF Spitfire Mk.V, based in North Africa and wearing the Day Fighter Scheme,...... which would have been originally worn by the subject of the model,..... and wearing a matching camouflage pattern; gold239 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Another pair of 40 Tac Recce Spitfire Mk.V`s from 225 Sqn RAF having a whoops moment,....... again showing the camouflage pattern changes,...... at this time the opposite pattern was the only one officially stipulated for use,.... the old A & B swapped around patterns having been replaced by one pattern, yet these still wear the opposite! spitfires 225 sqn-3 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Cheers Tony Edit,.... oh yeah,..... I had forgotten that this Spit had clipped wingtips,..... so I`ve cut off the original tips and replaced them! Col.
Tidy work and once again well researched Tony. I find your background to each subject as facinating and entertaining as your work on the models you produce.

I enjoy doing the research and don`t trust most decal manufacturers or kit producers to be comprehensive enough in their own research,... although there are exceptions to this rule of course! It is nice to uncover previously unknown info or bust a previously held conception too! Cheers Tony
stevej60
Excellent work again Tony, you know sometimes I get a little jaded with modelling wondering if I should spend time doing other thing's etc then I see you and a few other's here full of enthusiasm and love of the subject and think hell no ,and crack another box open!
Rabbit Leader
Well said Steve - and I totally agree. Tony provides so much enthusiasm to this hobby that it's so hard not to get caught up in all the excitement. It's excellent modellers like him that help motivate what (at times) can be an isolated but rewarding hobby. Cheers.. Dave
tonyot
Oh cheers lad`s,..... that is really nice of you to say so,....... and there was me thinking that I might be getting on everybody`s nerves!!! tonyot
Hiya Folks, A bit of an update,..... the decals are on! Unfortunately the SAAF orange centred fuselage and wing roundels on the Xtradecal sheet were too small,...... so I opted to use the roundels from the Special Hobby kit that I`m going to build in French markings in the Brits Abroad GB. These roundels are the correct size,.... however they are also out of register,...... and so although the wing roundels and fin flashes from the SH kit were still utilised (although the registration problem still shows up around the roundel edges), the yellow outer rings were awful for the fuselage set so I used the roundels from the Revell Spitfire Vc that I am building on this GB ( wearing USAAF markings) and using the orange centre discs from the SH kit on these roundels,..... confused? I also used the WR-O codes from the SH kit as these were better than the Xtradecals which were again too small and the serial was also the wrong style too on this sheet,...... in fact the only part of the Xtradecal sheet that I ended up using was the unit insignia on the side of the nose! Anyway,... here is the model; DSCF4198 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4200 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Cheers Tony
Max Headroom
How have I missed another one of your masterclasses? Stunning as always and I agree with others that the scheme is very attractive. I started and stalled this kit as I’m a bit nervous about the undercarriage issue. I’d appreciate your thoughts on tackling the issue. Teeny, tiny observation......some of your captions on the real thing are captioned as being MK.IX’s! Sorry!! Trevor the deeply awed

Trevor the deeply awed Cheers Trev,..... the undercarriage thing is a bit off putting..... best to wait until you are in the right mood for some fiddly bits and then just crack on,......it really isn`t so bad once you start! I have left the small part in place and will fit the main gear leg at the end. As for the `captions',.... they aren`t mine,...... that is what the files were named as when I got them,...... scarily from the pilot`s who flew them in some cases!! No I can assure you that I know the difference between a Mk.IX and a Mk.Vb! Plus the names don`t show up on my PC and only show up when they appear here on BM via being saved on Flickr,.... and I`m not going through every one to check them! Please don`t use them as captions,.... they are just file names! All the best Tony
tonyot
Hiya Folks, Getting there with this one now,...... Beard
That's looking rather lovely Tony and, FWIW, I don't think it's too dirty. BTW, you've done another one I had planned for this GB... oh well, it means I can spend time making a racket on my Telecaster rather than model making.

Yet another superbly researched, finished and displayed Spitfire to add to your (.... donno - lost count) other great MTO builds. Roll on Pacific GB - me thinks? Cheers..
