tonyot
Hiya Folks, Well look what arrived from Hannants today,...... I thought that it would be rude not to start it,..... especially as I`d like to include a Malta Hurricane in the GB! DSCF4064 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Here are the kit contents, including the Hasegawa kit parts in the bag, a new decal sheet, resin propeller, wheels (2 x sets, one with post war block tread) and pilots seat plus a paint mask for the canopy,..... not bad for £15. DSCF4065 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4066 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4067 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Since taking the pics I have pre painted the interior, built the wings and fuselage, ready to inset the cockpit from below and attach the wings,.... so quite a quick initial build. If I didn`t have to wait for daylight to take pics,.... then it would be assembled already as it is quite a basic kit! The rear fuselage will need some attention to the fabric representation! Procopius
I noticed the instructions seem to think there's a PE instrument panel, but ultimately one appears never to have been included in the kit.

Yeah I noticed that too,..... I`m just going to dig out a decal from an old Revell Spit from the spares box instead,.... you can hardly see inside anyway, especially once the canopy is fitted. Rabbit Leader
This one's quick out of the box Tony. Good to see you posting images and a build thread of this kit so soon after release. I'm sure within a week or two, it will hit the Big H top 10 list, so I figure you probably deserve a freebie from them if that's the case. Most of us know this hard to obtain Hasegawa plastic, however it's nice to see it again with the new resin bits provided. A Malta Hurri will be (yet another) one to watch. Cheers.. Stew Dapple
Nice Are you doing the cover box art version Tony? I do like the look of the desert camo over Night... Cheers, Stew

Franz75
This is old Hasegawa repack. Nevertheless it is a good kit, and this one have some extra resin parts. Good luck.
FalkeEins
out of stock already though... and priced at £16.50. Add postage and thats a 20 quid 72nd Hurricane. Nice 'extras' admittedly but I might pass on reflection...

tonyot
Cheers Folks, I`ve made a bit more progress today; DSCF4073 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4076 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4088 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4089 by Tony OToole, on Flickr And for the fabric I`ve decided to cover the rear fuselage in filler and then sand it smooth, retaining some of the stringer detail; DSCF4090 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Cheers for now, Tony
tonyot
Colour scheme`s? I had ORIGINALLY been thinking of making a Far East based Hurri such as this from 136 `Woodpecker' Sqn; Hurri IIb, 136 sqn 'C for Charlie' flown by Sqn Ldr A W Ridler Sept 1942. by Tony OToole, on Flickr But decided to make a Malta aircraft instead and include it in the GB. There are two options in the kit for Malta based aircraft plus decals that `could' be used to help with a third,..... but I`m not too happy about the colour directions that are intended for use! This one, may have black undersides as per the colour directions,..... although the rear fuselage wheel strake looks rather light,..... but the upper surfaces like most Malta Hurricane`s are Dark Earth and Dark Green, not desert scheme as per the kit; 3a-F.Etchells via B.Cull by Tony OToole, on Flickr The other decal option, this one is depicted as being in a Mid Stone and Dark Green scheme,.... but it is simply Dark Earth and Dark Green, seen under strong Maltese sunlight,... or even a modified `sea scheme' replacing the green with a dark blue grey colour such as EDSG! The rudder appears to be a replacement ad also the engine cowlings,....from another aircraft wearing the opposite camouflage pattern; 158 by Tony OToole, on Flickr There are plenty more to consider,..... some of which can be seen here; ccba465e946816001c09067a8aec947b--hawker-hurricane-fighter-aircraft by Tony OToole, on Flickr Hurricane IIBD789 HAC, 126 sqm, malta nov941, MC202near Dingl- key forum by Tony OToole, on Flickr Or even the well known Fleet Air Arm flown Hurricane`s,....... which could have an overall Blue Grey upper surface or Temperate Sea Scheme?; BG766 by Tony OToole, on Flickr balt-2 tony otoole25 by Tony OToole, on Flickr I`ll decide soon! Cheers Tony Edit,.... there is also this one, which is a favourite; 121x 207a by Tony OToole, on Flickr Or the famous `Death Warmed Up' flown by Bill Hollis Hallett, who was later killed in a hotel foyer by a bomb; Bill Hollis Hallett death warmed up hurricane died when sheltering in hotel in Malta was bombed by Tony OToole, on Flickr For the latter I at least have these decals,..... 0261175 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Or a squadron mate which crashed during an attack against a Sicilian airfield,.... but the underside of the wings have been overpainted,in an unknown colour, partially covering the roundels; 21 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Hurricane-MkIIa-HA-D-Z2491-Malta-captured-Sicily-73SA-01 by Tony OToole, on Flickr s-l300 by Tony OToole, on Flickrtimthumb by Tony OToole, on Flickr X72161_4 by Tony OToole, on Flickr Edited June 9, 2018 by tonyot 5

tonyot
Haha,...yeah cheers Beard!!! Well,..... here is the model after the rear fuselage was sanded; DSCF4094 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4095 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4096 by Tony OToole, on Flickr It needed some more filler too,....there are sink marks on the outer wings and I added some to the upper fuselage for safety`s sake; DSCF4098 by Tony OToole, on Flickr This is afterwards; DSCF4101 by Tony OToole, on Flickr And after a couple of coats of Dark Earth; DSCF4104 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4103 by Tony OToole, on Flickr DSCF4108 by Tony OToole, on Flickr There are some ribs visible,....but they don`t show up verk well on the pics! Time to decide which one I`m going to do now! Cheers Tony Edited June 10, 2018 by tonyot
FalkeEins
..nice work with the Revell filler Tony, but I'm disappointed to learn that the Fly box art is not accurate - having taken the plunge and invested! Thanks for the colour notes - I'm sure its all in your book ..but not quite sure where that is right now!
Max Headroom
The Plasto makes a lot of difference! If I remember rightly I smothered mine in Tipp Ex for the same effect. Looking good! Trevor
Rabbit Leader
She’s looking all lovely and smooth as if it was dipped in a Willy Wonka pond of chocolate. The rear fabric effect is certainly much better with your addition of filler. Shame it has to be done and agree it’s a brave step to have to tackle with this kit. Another top shelf entry looks to be in the making here Tony. Cheers.. Dave
Procopius
Looking good, Tony! It just occurred to me, though...as a brush-painter, do you use the canopy mask?
tonyot
Thanks Fella`s,..... hopefully I`ll get on with the Dark Green soon,..... thinking of going for the Malta Night Fighter Unit Hurri with black undersides? Re the canopy mask,.... I`ve used it and had a go at dappling on the paint,.... it it doesn`t work I`ll take the paint off with a wooden tooth pick and start again. Suppose I should have sealed it with some rattle can paint,....oh well! Cheers Tony
Beard
The 'like' was for your choice of scheme not the possibility of the canopy mask not working as intended.
Hardtarget
Oooh me likey very much. shame about the fuselage being to prominent and having never built the hasegawa versions not come across it to date. What an odd mistake to make from the Japs.
FalkeEins
just to sum up, Malta Hurricanes were standard dark green/earth finish ..and not desert scheme then ?

I’m not disputing this, however that’s a fairly broad statement I would think? This would suggest that many colour artwork, profiles and previous built models are not quite right. Does this relate to any specific mark as Mk.1’s, IIa’s, IIb’s and IIc’s all served in Malta over time. Cheers.. Dave
DaveyGair
Looks a nice job there Tony. Considering what it's possible to pay on top of a £10-£13 kit for extra bits, the price isn't bad and apart from the much mentioned overdone fuselage detail, it is supposed to be an accurate and nicely detailed kit.
