I think I got the masking too high. I found a neat build on a site called Kampfgruppe144 by a modeller by the name of Merlin Jones. I can't find a way to message, but I'd like to use one of the photos just to illustrate the point. So with acknowledgement to Merlin at Kgr144.... Hi Rob, I'll send Merlin a PM on Kmpg144 and link your post for you. Mike
rob Lyttle
Couldn't wait-- I HAD to find out if the cheat-lines would correspond with my demarcation between Paint and foil. Now that, friends, is nothing short of a little miracle! I knew that the tailplanes gave a good datum at the back, but after that, I was Freestylin' !! Anybody used the 26decal sheet supplied? I think I have sussed the cargo doors, but there are two tiny transfers-- they must be white details. I can't make them out without dipping them. Could they be the Eagle Airways writing on the tops of the doors? On the sheet they are invisible but they look the right sizes to fit the two doors. They're right there..... Really!! bootneck
That's looking really good Rob. I've checked my set of decals and there are two different sizes - the left for the front door and the other for the rear, as in your image in the first post. They both say the same "The Bermuda Airline", with 'The Bermuda' in a curve over the top of the level 'Airlne'. HTH Mike

That is exactly what I was hoping for! ( Tried the light behind, at a glancing angle, right on the sheet, everything)
rob Lyttle
I've been having a play with the props. As is often said, they are quite clunky, and at this scale, weak. Any thinning will only make them weaker, especially in my hands . Here's something I tried as an experiment... Still not sure about it... Comments? Pressing on with the decals- once you start it's hard to put them away! First time with 26decals product. Very nice. Well behaved!👍

rob Lyttle
The u/c legs are a positive close fit and no glue required. But to my surprise, she's a real tail-sitter. I'd packed the cockpit area before joining, but more required. At least the same again! I drilled underneath to 3mm, ... and fed plasticine sausages in one by one, and packed them forward against the bulkhead. Also visible there is a length of steel nail cut long enough to reach the cabin roof. That was super glued in to finish the job. Just a fraction short, but that's better than too long! Bingo! I'm still slightly surprised that it took so much. But, she's up and standing! And... We have flaps. Well, one flap... Corsairfoxfouruncle
Nice fix on the weight .. I like the idea of the nail to plug the hole.

rob Lyttle
Cargo hatches! On the starboard side.... How come ALL the drawings and most photos just show the port side ?!?😠 These are from the BM walkaround section Edited June 15, 2018 by rob Lyttle
rob Lyttle
Couple of bits done as the opportunity arises. After some faffing around with bits of stretched sprue and plastic, I settled for bent wire antennas on the roof. I had another little blade aerial on top of the cockpit area, and then broke it off again. Same with the HFAerial mast to the side. I'll give them another go, when I'm just about finished! The front gear doors there- I made them from pie dish Ali. The kit part was one piece and very thick. The main doors needed lugs removing and loads of thinning towards the bottom edge. The little rear doors that fit on the back u/c legs were again way too thick to be used, so they're squares of Ali too. Not so easy to photograph, though. Those two black discs on the top are described in my information as D/F Loop Aerials. I can see them on VR-BAX. I think I'm going to make 4 clear disc props
rob Lyttle
So here's my interpretation of the flaps structures from the picture. Two guide lugs protruding from the edge of the wing, Flap removed in this one ⬆ They got foiled. Then two lines (representing slots?) applied on the top of the main flap. That just leaves the blasted engine fronts and props to sort.. Hmmmm
rob Lyttle
I was out and about today, and as far travelled as Camberley, and tracked down the much-recommended model shop.. Obviously very big on military vehicles, seeing you'd be able to shout to someone at Sandhurst Military Academy from the shop door! Some great stuff on the shelves and an informative chat. And I spotted my heart's desire 💓 I have a Connie in 1/144, in MATS livery, which will go nicely with this Viscount for sure. But THIS is a whole other story. This will go nicely with the DC 3 Air France model in 1/72. Must focus on the job in hand.....

rob Lyttle
I've been a little indecisive about what to do with the propellers on the Viscount, and distracting myself with DC 7s and Connies, etc 😀 But I had another look at the kit props and had another go at thinning the blades. And I think I'm going to go along with them, if they paint up okay. There's only 3of them, as I've used a spinner for the clear plastic disc version...... And to be honest I stepped on one set of blades a little bit! So, And here's a picture lined up a bit like the original photo I've been referencing throughout the build. Looking at other Viscount pictures, it's not often you see them with flaps deployed, but I'm glad I got this reference shot and set about making them. A little bit more thinning on the blades perhaps before a light paint job, and I think I'm about done.☺ Edited June 23, 2018 by rob Lyttle picture
rob Lyttle
I was looking through my aeroplane stuff yesterday, looking for some plans related to something else completely, when I found a book I haven't looked at for years..... Vol 4, the Propeller Era. It's got Constellations, DC 6s, Electra's, Viscounts, Vanguards, Stratocruisers... the LOT!! And some great photos in there too. I even found a mistake. Dealing with Viscount 700 G-AFTN belonging to British Eagle Airways, the author has included this- An easy mistake I suppose, if you lack the expertise of a model builder...😂😎😂 (Thought I ought to flag you on this, @Max Headroom!) So it's an interesting read, this time with a little more interest in the aircraft. It's in no way a sensationalist or lurid set of accounts, but a good balanced look at circumstances and technology that prevailed, and lessons learnt. Still looking through for reference material on these epic liners. I expect the book will be used a lot more now! rob Lyttle
So I think I'm just about done with this little kit. It's been fun and educational. And I was interested to see if my efforts with Ali foil would work and look OK at this scale. Looeks like the answer is, well yes, just about, but it's pretty well at the limits of what it can do. Or limits of what I can do with it. And useful for adding some features to a blank fuselage before the paint Now I need to decide if I want to try out with their version of the BOAC VC10. Or the F-rsin option? Think I'd better ask around before taking the leap There's a few other things in the queue anyway. Cheers. ..😃
