AMT/ERTL 1/72 XB-70A Valkyrie

Recommended Posts

Another long-term stash lurker. I think I bought it at a Woodford air show in 1997.
Not a particularly difficult build but its sheer size made construction and painting difficult. Careful dry-fitting meant I didn't have too many problem with fit, a bit of sanding and filling but nothing too serious. As it wouldn't fit in the spray booth, I had to wait on a calm dry day to spray with Halfords Appliance White. I ended up with a bit of an orange-peel finish but not too bad. Decals were few and far between and went on easily. Finished as the first XB-70A 62-0001 as it ended up at NASA.
Even photographing the model was difficult due to the size.

Beautiful model 👍 ... to give you an idea of the size. I have stood underneath the example at the USAF Museum many times. I am 6’7” and my head is about where the bottom of the intake is.

That is one impressive lawn dart! Very nice finish, too!

Well done, I the biggest I have built is a 1/72 B-52.  Your biggest problem will be where to keep it safe.

Excellent!

Glad you stopped it being a stash lurker and posted the results.

Amazing-looking plane - a large-ish beast in 1/72 I daresay.

What a monster. I need to build one of these as well as part of my NASA themed builds.

What a terrific looking beast.  The Valkyrie was a pretty awesome creation and your model shows this well.  The finish looks very nice and smooth to my eye.  I think I would approach painting a kit this size with a rattle can with a certain amount of trepidation, hence the otherwise pretty much complete Nimrod I have that has been awaiting similar treatment.  I like the term 'stash lurker'.  Perhaps we should have a competition to see who has had a kit in the stash for the longest.  1997 is pretty impressive.

That photo in post 5 is one hell of a Mistel combination: looks like a What-iffer  has been experimenting with illegal substances (or maybe I have).

North American proposed an upgraded version of the X-15 rocket research aircraft with a larger delta wing. They also proposed that it would be launched piggy back from an XB-70.

You're not going to lose that!

Brilliant that you tackled it and made such a clean job. What a show-stopper.

Nicely done! I found one of these kits at a Consignment Store some years ago (ye olde "Value Village" ) for a few CA$$, I was overjoyed seeing as it was one of the icons of my pre-teen years and really wanted one - and then when realized exactly HOW BIG the finished model is going to be, it ended up in my stash right next to my 1/48 C-130 and 1/48 B-29 kits. Looking at yours I feel inspired enough to want to move the furniture to make room for it though :D

THAT is a great build!

I'd dearly love to see a 1/144 version. Well, beside the Anigrand resin...
