BF 109G-6 1/48 - My First Adult Build!

Recommended Posts

It all depends on what you are in to, but Tamiya kits take a lot of beating, I've never heard anyone having problems

If you want a good 1/48 kit that goes together really well I would recommend Tamiyas P47 Thunderbolt in either razorback or bubbletop versions

I've built both since I've been back into modelling and they will build your confidence up no end

The other I would recommend is the 1/48 Meng P51D Mustang

Really nicely done mate.

I've never really had too much interest in American planes but the schemes you have picked are nice.

Middle P-47 in particular.

I have heard Tamiya are very nice kits to build.

I've started putting the decals on mine.

Slowly but surely coming together,

Thanks mate

Over the years, ie 30 years ago and the last couple since I've got back into modelling, I've never had any problems with Tamiyas kits what ever the subject

Almost done.

On and off this has taken me near 14 months 🤣

Has anyone else taken this long on one model?

God its been hard work and tricky.

Took me 2 years to finish an airfix ww1 Hannover CL3a! The first 18 months was spent repeatedly taking the bits out of the box, being utterly defeated at the mere thought of trying to achieve the required lozenge pattern on the wings, and just boxing it all again and returning it to the drawer! So to be honest, you're doing brilliantly - keep it up! :thumbsup2:

Thanks Clive.

Yeah some bits I've looked at and gone "I need a clear head, not after work" and put it back for the weekend!

I've actually started a Spitfire too because its just a damn site easier and I've put the lessons from this kit into the next and its coming together easier,

Have you got any photos of that epic 18 month build?

Hi guys,

I just posted a fresh topic but stupidly put in on the WW1 discussion page!

The topic is as follows which I would like advise on please:

............................................................................................................................................

HI folks,

Some of you may know I'm undertaking a build of a BF109.

I've just sprayed a coat of Humbrol Acrylic Varnish (Gloss 35) ready for applying decals and the following has happened to the paint work as an immediate reaction:

Its seems to be concentrated in one area for some reason.

IMG_20180829_174214

I swear I have read elsewhere people having problems with the product but checking the Amazon reviews now they're mostly very positive.

I researched the prep required for the varnishing and I shook the can for 30 seconds, placed it in warm water for 2 minutes and then further shaked the can for 30 seconds and then applied it outside.

I applied across the aircraft from approx 20cm.

This has not happened to the top surfaces which I applied yesterday.

Any ideas what has happened here please?

Is it a mistake from me or is this a poor product which I need to replace?

I've also got the acrylic matt coat from Humbrol which I intend to finish with but I'm now worrying all my hard work will go down the pan!

Opinions very much welcome please.

Hello Oberleutnant !

I got that same trick twice with Tamiya canned varnish

Once over Xtracrylics paints and the other over Life color paints.

Of and a third time in fact but the varnish has just wrinkled the decals only !

As I did'nt find any cause, I no longer use canned varnishes !!

Sincerely.

CC

I don't want to hijack your thread, but here's one:

I eventually broke the cycle of despair by searching online for paint schemes for these aircraft that didn't involve lozenge patterns, and getting lucky - that was in January 2016. Oddly enough in my search I also came across references to this site, and so I joined up there and then!

Yeah I've bought some Vallejo matt and gloss varnish to experiment with brush painting.

Do worry about brush strokes on the larger surfaces though.

I've used it on the landing gear as a trial and it looks okay.

Do you brush paint yours on?

Looks very nice!

I think I did the same when joining up - searching for a model for reference and ended up joining.

Are the pylons between the wings difficult?

Struts were a bit fiddly, but I managed it. I found out after that there are such things as biplane jigs, which allow you to position the upper plane to the right distance from the lower one, holding it in place whilst you fit the struts at your leisure.

Makes sense.

I can only imagine them not being parallel at the end and it going in the bin!

Absolutely! I can't imagine doing a biplane without recourse to a jig now :)
