Azgaron
Still busy with my Bucc, but here's my Draken build, that I intend to return to asap. Box. Build started. Some paint. Cockpit. More color. Landing gear. Exhaust pipe. More in next post. Håkan
Azgaron
Some detail painting in the cockpit and the main gears. and the seat. Cockpit in place and fuselage joined. Intakes and fin added, and also some puttying and sanding done. This is how far I've come, and I realized later that I've made a little misstake. There's supposed to be a slight step in the rear. I've almost sanded down too much. Håkan
Ham Hands
Hello. Very nice indeed. Happy to see another draken.

Ham Hands
It's awesome. What paint did you use on the gear? I was planning a mix of IJN green mixed with Israeli Kfir green. I had a good look at the photos and it seems the large spars are green only in part, the rest being a flat metalic. So I stripped my gear and sprayed the struts in Alclad polished aluminium. I'll have to mask off the bits that are unpainted and spray my green mix on the rest.
Azgaron
I think it was a RLM color, but not sure which one at the moment. I'll see if I can figure which one it was. Håkan
Ham Hands
I am going to use H309, the cockpit colour. (I had an accident. Working on the kit late into the night I slipped and cut my finger and scratched the fuselage with a scalpel. I have filled the scratch with Mr Surfacer. I should have slept. )
Azgaron
Ouch, not fun when such things happen! I think the gears have a slightly greyish tone compared to the warmer green in the cockpit. I still haven't figured which colors I used! Håkan
Azgaron
I added a little detail to the vent in the fin. Drilled a hole and added a home made pitot tube on the fin. Not glued yet, as I might break it while handling the plane. I dipped the canopy and front glass in Pledge. Gonna mask them and use as cover, when painting the plane. Lastly I added fences? on the underside of the wings. The pylon(s) are only test fitted, as I'm unsure if they should be in camo or metal. Hopefully soon time for primer, to see where I need to put more effort with seams. Håkan
Christer A
Draken? That's quite different from a Buccaneer or Harriet, or a Stirling. I don't recall seeing this before, but you've done a bang up job so far!
Azgaron
Thanks Christer! Yeah, it's a bit of difference! I started it last year, as I also got caught in the Draken build "frenzy" on "our" forum. My intention is to add it to this years finished builds. Azgaron
I started masking the glass pieces, and the front is done, but when I was about to start with the canopy, I've noticed this. Can't have been looking very closely at the glass before dipping it, as I didn't notice until now. Assuming it shouldn't be there. It's on the inside too, which makes it much harder to remove, as I don't have sanding/polishing sticks that small. I can't recall reading about it in the builds I've seen, but maybe I didn't pay attention! Håkan
Azgaron
It turned out, the instructions was a bit confusing, showing the rear part of the canopy as glass. In realitiy it should be painted in camo color. The canopy was masked accordingly. Will paint the inside asap, so I can put the glass parts in place, but before doing that I needed to sort a few things missing in the cockpit. The only thing left, is adjusting the lenght of the rods and adding the HUD display. Hopefully I'll get to paint primer soon. Håkan
Azgaron
Added the HUD display, but forgot to take a picture. Took a picture of the painted canopy though! And then the glass parts glued in place. I noticed that i need to adjust the canopy a bit. Wanna make sure there are no leaks. Gonna have open canopy once it's done. Next will be a cote of primer, checking all the seams. Håkan
Azgaron
First cote of primer on! Will make a cote on the underside too. Then I'll check for flaws. Feels like I'm getting closer to paint! Håkan

Azgaron
Some additional puttying and sanding was done. A few more things to do before painting. Need to figure if the pylons should be in aluminium or underside camo color. I also need to figure which color to use on the belly. Aluminium or something more steelish. Azgaron
I "stole" 2 AIM-4D from my weapons set, and assembled them. Just need to check how they should be painted to look like Rb-28's Covers and some other parts mounted and ready for paint. Painted in black. I also used the black color for some pre shade. Not as good as planned, but I'll live with it. Will do the other side later. Håkan
Ham Hands
Hello Hakan. It is looking great. I am looking at draken photos on the net. If I see anything with regards to the pylons for the scheme, I will let you know. I think wing pylons are camo, and under the fuselage they are metal. At least on the grey version. I may be wrong. I will have a look and if I find anything definitive will let you know. Edited June 29, 2018 by Ham Hands
Azgaron
Thank you! I've been looking at quite a few pics from different walkarounds, but it's pretty hard sometimes to tell if it's a painted grey or very flat faded aluminium. On some pics the aluminium under the belly have the same dull grey color, as do the tanks. Think I'll try and go for that look, if I can find a suitable alu color. Ham Hands
Hello Hakan. Yes I too am unsure. I opted to paint them metal while thinking they are pretty hard to see. An easy out. Those tanks are pretty big. My tanks are in aluminium. If I am wrong I will change them before it is done. I am in no hurry and am happy to change. The 1/48 special hobby viggen arrived today. I showed it to Darth.
Azgaron
I painted all the parts in natural aluminium. In my mind it got just the nuance I was after. Mixed too little, so I need to paint the tanks again. Think I'll use the same color on the belly as well. Will try to create some varation. That's nice! Might get one to, as I'm not buying the Italeri crap reissue. I already have the Airfix and Esci kits. Saw an SR-71 for sale, and I might not be able to resist it! Azgaron
The tanks needed a bit more TLC on visible seams, that I missed, and the underside got a preshade, that turned out a lot better than on the top. Back with the tanks on the sticks and on with some black on them and the 2 RB28's. The robots will get a layer of white, and the tanks a new layer of aluminium. I will commence painting the underside soon. Håkan
